Hello every one! I was wondering what everyones thoughts are one the 5 or 6 rarest modern gold commems.I have noticed that their prices have almost doubled in the last two years, especially the 2000 bimetallic uncurculated coin. Not counting the Jackie Robinson, the Library of congress $10, Capital visitors Center, Stadium, Flag Bearer, Cauldron, Smithsonian, Torch Runner and F.D.R. have almost doubled in price. Is the gold commemorative market really hot right now? Just a few months ago I was looking to buy the Library of Congress at about $1800 and noticed it is selling for around $3000 now. I am not sure what Grey Sheet is at this moment, but is this another trend? Capital Visitors Center was selling for around $550- $650 a few months ago and now lists for close to $1000. (Third rarest in the series and second among $5 modern commems.) All the others listed have gone up at least 50% and are not that available. ( of course I am talking about uncurculated coins, and not proofs) Just wondering what everyone thinks about this. I was trying to put together a set of at least one of the 21 or so designs, of course starting with most of the rarest, but each month , they seem to be out of reach, and increasing in price.. All comments and thoughts are welcome!
I think they are overpriced now. This is not to say that they won't become even more overpriced because some of the mintages are pretty low, but I don't think anyone can predict that. A couple of years ago the more common gold commems were underpriced in my opinion. You could buy slabbed MS69 and PF69 examples or coins in the original mint packaging for less than melt value. But if you manage to put together a complete set, it will be nice. I think the gold commems are much more attractive than the silver.
I've got all the proofs for the modern commem series. I guess I should have coeemcted the uncirculated ones.
