I thought this was a bit funky:

They seem too straight to be a crack. Anybody know what up with this?

This is probably feeder finger scratches where the feeder finger scratched the die. It you keep roll searching you may find some with the entire reverse side of the coins totally covered with these die scratches. I keep all of them that I find with the most severe scratches , so far I have about 5 or 6 of them. the ones with numerous heavy scratches seem to be a bit scarce so maybe the mint workers noticed them and changed the die.

Looks raised to me, cracks can be straight.

Looks like a Die Crack or Die Scratch, and I love these little lines/errors! Sometimes they end up in such bizarre areas....
I've seen ones people call the "Lincoln Assassination" because on the obverse, there was a massive line going straight through the front of Lincoln's forehead and into his head. Almost like a CSI Ballistics line of trajectory...lol

Like rascal said, I don't usually keep mine unless they are in a comedic or bizarre positioning, and they don't carry any real premium.

I also think they are feeder finger scrapes, which do not command a premium. Definitely not die cracks. But I'm not big on errors.
    Keep up the hunt!

Non Cents, do you have a picture you could post of a good die crack? Or maybe start another thread? Thanks!

I've seen tens of thousands of die cracks on Morgan dollars, and I've yet to see one that straight. Besides, if they were cracks, they wouldn't stop at a device and start up again on the other side. Whether they are gouges caused by feeder fingers or not, I don't know, but they are definitely not die cracks.

Die cracks are erratic, because of the fact that they are cracks. If you look at a cracked sidewalk, would you expect to see one line that is straight? I would not think so.

Living in Southern California, where we get lots of earthquakes, and especially with our garbage roads out here, cracks go in every way, straight included. :D

    :dead-horse:

Time to go back and rename some coins....

Are you kidding me? California doesn't even have a straight road.

I was talking about cracks.....not roads......
and who says a crack can't be 2 inches long? I'm not necessarily talking about cracks as long as a whole street. I was originally talking about Die cracks, and it led to a road and sidewalk debate.

    Going back to hunt....:rollling:

I think you missed the joke, but this thread has gone off-topic anyway. ;) (Partially my fault for the analogy)

Non..is this an example of a die crack? It's the one I was talking about earlier, what I called "Lincoln's Bad Hair Day."
    Thanks!

I'm not the man you were asking, but I do have a pic of a die crack.

    Gotcha! Makes perfect sense now.

    Thanks a million for clarifying!

Now lemme ask you this, does a true die crack always protrude inwards from the rim? Or can in be randomly on the coin not touching the rim? Thanks again

It can protrude from other places as well. If you look at cents from 1983 and 1984, you will commonly see cracks extending from the corners of the memorial building.

Cool! Seems like there were many errors of many different types from the years 1983-1984. Thanks for all the info guys!
