I am not seeing a strong curve through the middle of the primary D mintmark that is normally found with a D/S but it could be a different 1954 d rpm.

Looks like a RPM to me, not a D over S. Curious to see what others say.

I looked at the 2 photos on the left and thought it looked more like deteriorated die, where rather thin chips were fractured off. Then I looked at the photo on the right and when enlarged to the max, I notices the die damage on the right post, edge of the roofing, and the base of the building, which reinforced my opinion it is deteriorated die.

so where there are different opinions do you think it may be one of those " i will just put it aside and when i am ambitous enough to start sending, go ahead and waste the few dollars just to make sure"

I don't know of any Jefferson nickel with an over mintmark or repunched mintmark that is that far away from eachother.
I agree that it is some sort of deteriorated die result. It does appear to possibly be a D over a slightly tilted forward D but the S way above that you want to see is not an S, I don't think anyway.

OK So I am new to this forum but not that new to coin collecting. I have been collecting since the late 80's till now and my father well since mid 1950's. Recently my father and I were searching through his coin collections and I think we came across the same thing. It looks like a D over S but none of the whitman books or websites have any information of a 1954 D over S only the 1955 D over S. Could some professional's on here maybe shed some insight on this one as well? By the way, this is a 1954 Jefferson Nickel. I didnt take a picture of the obverse. photo 1.JPG photo 2 copy.JPG photo 2.JPG photo 4.JPG photo 5.JPG

SUPPPPPER INTERESANT. Because It's a simple error of the letter they used first "R" When they saw the error. They stamped the right one "D".

So they actually stamped and "R" first? Then when they saw that they made and error they stamped the D over it? Has anyone seen this before? Is this one of a kind?

I don't think it is an over-mintmark. I think it is just die deterioration.

It looks like a over mintmark of D over S! You can clearly see the curviture in the 1st picture under stamp... I don't see the R unless it was backwards.

I believe it is die deterioration also. An underlying "S" would have the center slant showing through the center of the "D". No overdate IMO.

You don't see an "R" because there isn't one and the other guy didn't bother to proofread his post.

As for your coin, the only thing I see is a normal-looking mintmark that appears to have taken a small hit.

    Is this an RPM or S under D or R under D. I'm lost at what I see. It's a 1954 nickle.
