As I mentioned in the intro section, I'm pretty new to coin collecting and I've already began assembling a set of wheat cents. However, after seeing my first Mercury dime, my attention was immediately shifted to this set. After doing quite a bit of research on the series, I decided to get my collection started with a purchase off of eBay, and this is what I decided on. http://tinyurl.com/y2vapr What do you think? Did I get a good deal, assuming that all of those grades are correct? His feedback was excellent, and the only thing I wish he would've included was a picture of the reverses of the coins.
Looks like a great deal. Congrats on the start to the new collection. I thought, at first, you had bought just the latteer dates in the series 1930-1945. Awesome start to the set, and cross your fingers on that 16-S, once in a while it's actually a 16-D. I found a coin labeled 16-S and it turned out to be a 16-D, so it could happen again. Not likely, but by chance.
Wow! It's tough to relate to that since I used to spend them as a kid. However, I think you bought a great collection at a very good price. Congratulations.
Very nice. :smile A little more than a buck apiece, for all different dates/mintmarks, in 2x2's, sounds very fair to me. Congratulation! Hope you enjoy building your collection, and keep us updated as to your new additions.
Way to go Steven! It's a fun series to collect and not overly expensive...YET! Except for that pesky '16D. I completed my set about 6 months ago with mostly VG to UNC but I must admit that the dime in the 16D spot in the photo is actually a 16(?)..the mintmark is completely worn off so it's just filling the hole until I win the lottery.
Good set and start. I see Merc rolls going for $55+ with a large majority being in AG-VG condition. I'd say you got yourself a nice deal. That's about what I paid to start my collection off. Something like 40 Mercs (a few doubles) in G/VG. Remember, you can always upgrade later or just save for the keys (which are really hard to find in the Merc series for some reason).
I'd say fantastic. I go to about 3 coins shows a Month and Mercury Dimes go for $1.25 each for the simplist and most common ones in not to good condition so you did great. Now here is something not to many people seam to know about those Merc Dimes. When you get them, note the reverse. Turn the flip over from top to bottom carefully. In my experience about 10 to 20 % of Merc Dimes have rotated reverses. Many are only slightly rotated but some are greatly rotated. I've got some that are as much as 90 % rotated. For some reason they are not listed as an error anywhere but I predict that someday, they will command a larger varlue. I've actually bought some with rotated reverses for less than they were worth because the dealer thought that was undesirable. If you put all your Merc's in a Whitman or Dansco Album where you can see both sides it is fun to notice the fronts all lined up and turn the page and you feel like your drunk. Also, some are rotated to the left and some to the right. Check it out.
Just Carl, Here is a photo of the reverse of the first page in my album that shows what you're talking about. The second page is not nearly as bad, with only a few slight rotations.I guess they got better or bought new presses.(click pic twice!)
I actually received my coins today....after the first shipment didn't arrive I'm assuming it got lost by the Postal Service. The seller was very understanding and actually sent me a second shipment of coins from the exact same dates, and there are a few that are graded BETTER than they were in the first shipment!
