Off this weekend and bored. So I bought a new camera. Canon PowerShot. Still playing with it and learning features. Has a feature that reads the white balance, so gonna spend some time with that. Read the article about restoring dateless nickels a few weeks ago. I had a few and thought, what the heck. They are only worth a nickel anyway. Found a 1914, 1920, 1923, and a 1925. interesting that they were all different dates. Placed them in 5% white vinegar for a week. Only the 1923 was starting to reveal any changes. I took them out for a few days and let them set. The next time I added a little salt to the vinegar After 2 days they all were dark and streaked. Lesson learned, don't add salt. I removed them from that environment and let sit for a couple more days. Next I let them sit 2 more days in the vinegar( minus the salt) The results are as shown. All have clearly readable dates. The surface, however are very rough and ugly. So now, I have 3 worth .05 each and maybe someone interested in the 1914. Who knows. Anyway I gave it a shot. Dang! why couldn't the 1914 be the overdate or a D mint.
