1921 PCGS Morgan AND Peace both have unique labeling, why?

Both (and only) the PCGS 1921 Morgan and Peace Dollars disclose "Morgan" and "Peace" on their label. No other PCGS examples display the coins 'name' on the label... is there a reason for this?

I think it's because they are the same year but different series therefore they need to make it easily discernable. By the way I just pulled that out of thin air, it's my best guess.

I think they do that also for 1909 Lincoln/Indian, 1938 Jefferson/Buffalo and some others that changed during the same year.

Sure they do. In fact, I can't think of overlapping series when they don't do it.

Having said that, I have seen PCGS graded coins for every one of these series/dates that don't have the series name on the label.

Exactly what I would have said, and makes sense. No need to put "Peace" on a 1922 dollar, because that's the only dollar ever minted that year.

They not only do it for series that overlap, but they mysteriously do it for the 1838 Reeded Edge half dollar, too, even though it did not overlap with another series in that year and even though it was neither the first nor last year of issue for the series.

I don't own them, just posted Heritage photos to illustrate the point.

What you have to watch out for is when they do this. So don't feel too bad :D

I've also recently handled an 1839 Seated Liberty half dollar that was listed as an RE half dollar.

Maybe the graders could use more than 7 seconds?

It had nothing to do with the graders, never does. Things like that are simple labeling mistakes made by staff who print the labels & assemble the slabs.

Actually the staff who initially enters the coin information from the invoice. That's what determines what is on the label except for the grade.
