What do you think? I believe the penny is a fake, the obverse and reverse are 0 degrees instead of 180 from each other. If you look at the reverse of the penny, I think someone actually milled the back out of a penny, leaving the rim, and then machined the obverse off of another one and then pressed them together and dinged the edges to hold it in. I really thought I found a good one when until I looked at it closely. The penny weighs 2.65 grams. Any money for a decent fake? If I am wrong please tell me how much its worth. The nickel however I think is an error?
Your diagnosis on the cent is correct, I think. Looks like someone was trying to fake a die rotation error. The light weight and the appearance of what looks to be a seam just inside the rim on the reverse and the stake marks all point to a manufactured error. Another tell is dropping it on a hard surface, it won't have the "ring" of a normal copper cent. As far as value, it's considered damaged. Nothing more than a novelty.
I thank both of you for the input. The greased filled die error on the nickel reverse, is it a decent error worthy of keeping or a common occurrence.
I kind of wondered if it might be a combination of both an off strike and grease fill error. The lettering is high on the edge and disappears though the middle without excessive signs of rubbing or wear.
If it is a grease-filled die, it won't bring much premium, if any. They tend to be seemingly common. Maybe a buck if you're lucky. Maybe. Just maybe.
