The Special Mint Set issues were only made in 1965, 66, and 67. So an SMS Kennedy will be one of those three dates. The mint didn't issue proofs during those years, but the SMS coins are sort of a cross between a proof and circulation strike. They used presses with higher tonnage and polished dies (like proofs) but were only struck once (like circulation coins).

An SMS Kennedy will generally have more luster and crisper devices. Some of the early die state coins have a cameo appearance similar to proofs, and those are much sought after by collectors. Those mint sets are still readily available and inexpensive.

If an SMS Kennedy made it into circulation and got worn down a bit, it would probably be impossible to distinguish it from a business strike coin, since neither had mint marks.

I don't know where you get yopur information Jello but it is somewhat misleading.

Truth be told, there is no guaranteed method of determining non-SMS from SMS other than by die variety. Those coins pulled from SMS Sets have die varieties that are unique only to SMS Coins and yes, I've purchased and gone through rolls of non-SMS 1965's and non-SMS 1966 Kennedy's.

Visibly, the SMS coins will have much higher eye appeal and appear almost prook like with some being cameo or deep cameo. None of the nhon-SMS coins have cameo or deep cameo qualities although many do have good eye appeal. Many are also "commonly" graded as SMS when in reality they are not.

Telling the difference between the two versions is simply a matter of acquired knowledge.

When i saw it, I knew there was something different about it. I never saw or even knew what a clashed die was. So it was very educational.

I did a few thing wrong as I am not a expert . if you have the newest Whitman CD/PDF file Kennedy Half dollar in 2012 on my buddy shop computer has a pg in Q David Bowers enplanes the non SMS 1967 half. if I can copy it to a size you can read & not break any Forum rules or Copywriter rules Whitman PDF file+Post it I will ,Q David Bowers note there were about 10,000 roll coin that were test dies being made because the 1965+1966 Die were breaking far to fast.as they testing new dies construction for the 68-D +69-D.
Also the Coin World May 2010 #1 or # 2 of the 5 of Decades collecting that as said that 85-95% 1967 SMS Kennedy were struck @ Denver mint.
I did have 2 US mint roll that my mom gave me for my birthday or Xmas from her mother bank my grandmother "Tanner Bank"in Catskill NY in 1967.
one had broken open over the years + not knowing there was 2 types 1967??? I gave most of them out as gifts or traded the open roll over the years but still have 3 lose ones I know I still have 1 sealed roll Bank Box.

This photo the same 1 I think is 1 Bowers note as non SMS just ended up issued to banks
I will post the other all 3 hopefully I can get a closeup photo of all 3 they just do not have look of a SMS to Me.

I am not saying 19Lyds is wrong"by no means".!!
