Any opinions on the mint mark? Unfortunately the closer in I get the more out of focus it becomes. It's almost as if the mint mark made a crash landing onto the coin and gouged out the southeast side of its location.

More like a crash on takeoff - from the mint press that is. Mike or another may correct me, but if remember correctly it can caused by a couple of things. Most likely cause is a stress crack in the copper cladding from when it was struck. The other is ejection damage - the mint mark ( or other areas of the devices ) can be pushed to the side slightly as the coin ejects from the press thus revealing the zinc layer below.

You are correct , you are seeing the zinc underneath the coppercladding - no biggie very very common

hey have any of you noticed that the D mink mark is not in the same place on 1988 d pennies, ie.some under the 8 and others closer to the 9...any feed back appreciated aloha

    dsmith23 Gotta get 'em all

mintmarks in 1988 were stamped to the die by hand, so there will be slightly different locations, no added premium

    and :welcome:

I have a 1988 d penny weighing 3.0 and is has a small d above the date as well as the normal d where the mint mark belongs. Is like to include a picture but unfortunately I don't know how to add one on here
