Hey everyone im am farily new here, not so much to coin collecting(id rate my self above novice) but im am curious as to everyones input on what coins to collect for my daughters coin collection from a profit/investment stand point. I have been dumping money into junk silver, silver eagles, and proofs sets thus far. Thanks for any and all advice and good hunting to everyone!

I am basically doing the same thing, my daughter is almost 5 now and I inherited a small collection from my grandfather and ever since then, it sparked a coin collecting hobby in me for the benefit of my daughter someday. Aside from the coins I got from my grandfather, which consisted of quarters, silver dollars, some junk silver and presidential dollars, I put together a dansco album of all the ASE's to date including the newly minted 2013. I also purchased a few of the commemorative coins that are 90% to full ounce of silver. I also started getting the proof sets only in silver and have them from 1999-2012 and want to pick up the 1992-1998 silver premier sets. Basically just keeping the modern coins going, knowing they will not be worth that much, but she has also taking a liking to the coins and knows they are for her when "she gets bigger" and have kept buying as much silver coins as I can, while still continuing to put money away in her 529 for college. Good Luck!

Thank-you jim for your time as did my grandfather start my coin collecting intrest i hope to do the same for my daughter. reguardless of what the value is when she takes them over i want to make sure i leave somthing for her and this seems like a really good idea aside from the fact that i love collecting aswell.

It may be more than you want to spend, but the First Spouse gold coins are selling in such low numbers that they have some potential....if there are enough people who want to collect them in the future.

Still, in your case it might be something your daughter will appreciate as there are not many coins with females on them.

Also, there will be a Girl Scout commemorative dollar coming out in the next couple of months that she might like. The uncicrulated commemoratives tend to sell in much smaller numbers than the proofs. They are $5 less than the proofs originally, and usually end up being worth more than the proof versions years down the road. But both versions will likely be money losers in the short term.

That Girl Scout commemorative is coming sooner than I thought -- February 28th.

I say skip the part about making it for profit/investment, and make it for the sake of starting her on a hobby. Coins barely stay ahead of inflation, so you could buy all day long and by the time she's an adult she might gain 3-4% on them. Thats less than, well, almost any other investment. Make it about history and art and learning and the challange, and you'll have given her an investment like no other.

Especially if he buys Proof Sets from the Mint. My advice, wait and buy it cheaper online or from a local coin shop for cheaper than the Mint sells them.

My daughter is due may 29th i have a overwhelming passion for history part of the reason why i love coins so much. I guess investment was the wrong term to use. I guess im looking more for advice as to what to collect for her so that it retains its value. I dont really have a lot going for me right now but i want to make sure if anything ever does happen to me that i can leave her somthing that can help...or just somthing to remeber me by.

Almost all people who have lots of experience with coins and the market will tell you don't invest in coins.

However, if you are absolutely going to attempt to invest in coins I would recommend only buying key dates from the most popular series. Either Morgan dollars or Lincoln cents is where I'd start. There will always be demand for an 09 S VDB or any Morgan with two C's on it.

And, IMO, you can never going wrong owning physical silver.

Good points there. Also would like to add condition rarities like common date morgans in MS 68.

What about silver roosevelt dimes? You can get really high grades for dirt cheap and it's a long series surely to keep you guys busy.
