I don't have that problem. My imaginary friend always listens... and sometimes he or she replies too.
Plautilla's story is one of the saddest. I wouldn't call it a Valentine. It turned out to be a good game after all. Hey John. Glad to see you finally made it.
Hi guy's, its good to see the group together again, i just hope steve's ok... I just got a Plautilla and several new coins, i just got to learn how to post the pic's and use the spell check, i hope there's a spell check.. me and computers ...well lets say i got a lot of work to do...
Just a bit different from CCF, but I'm beginning to think that it may just be a little bit better once you learn the ropes.
Here's my Plautilla, this is more of a test...Wow, looks like i know what i 'm doing... Plautilla..205 AD.. AR Denarius .. Ob. Bust of Plautilla right.. Rev. Plautilla and Caracalla clasping hands.. 18mm x 3.2g..:thumb:
I have two myself I could post in it if it's made, lol. Shes cheaper then some empresses. Its just a matter of patience.
I see a lot of familiar faces from other places. I used to be quite active here but stopped visiting around a year ago when the ancient discussions just about dried up. It is good to find out where people disappeared to. Martin (thanks for the steer Doug)
=> thanks Eng, yah I'm okay (somehow I ended-up surviving last night's NFL Super Bowl party ... but as always, my house and I are both a total disaster this morning!!) maridvnvm => it's great to be coining with the gang once again ... your coins are deifinitely among the finest that I've ever seen (can't wait to see some more!!) :b8nce:
It certainly wasn't my intention to evoke depression by posting my 12 Caesars denarii! Personally, I find it both inspirational and aspirational to view other collectors' coins, as well as dealers' websites and auction sites. Doing so gives me a sense of what's out there in the ancient coin world relative to my own collection, plus possible future ideas for the direction of my collection. Unless you're a hedge fund manager or an Arab sheik, your collection will always be subject to the constraints of your budget. This doesn't prevent me from personally enjoying coins that will never be within my overall or individual coin budget, so I always welcome others' posting their coins.
There is "always a better collection". There is a member of my ancient coin club who will pass around XF Julius Caesar portrait denari and gold octodrachms around the table like they are popcorn. While I know I will never have such a collection, I am happy for him, and love looking at his coins. Heck, even IF you are an arab sheik or a hedge fund manager, no one will ever be able to rival the BM's collection, so really no one should ever begrudge others their coins, or feel badly about their own collection. Coin collecting to me is more about learning, appreciating the past, and the comradery than it is the little pieces of metal. No one is keeping score, so buy what you can, when you can, and appreciate every coin in existence. You cannot hope to own them all, because if you did there would be no one else to talk with about them. How boring would that be!
I don't think that was the intent. I, too, love to see the coins of others, but doing so I also realize in some cases I will never be able to have some of those coins and that makes me "sad" for me, but happy for the other guy.
I understand sir, just trying to put it in perspective. On one hand a few people will have better coins than I do, (ok, more than a few but not many in terms of world population), but OTOH my ancient collection is WAY better than 99.9% of the general public. Plus, I get to talk to you guys and share my passion. I just think how darn LUCKY I am for knowing about these coins, their history, and being involved in a small part of the hobby. I know iamtiberius didn't really mean it that way, but he should realize how FEW people on this rock own a 12 Caesars set, or will EVER be able to own one. He is in a tiny little population of holders of such a title. As such, he is the envy of scores of other collectors out there.
Two things. Don't call me sir. I am out of the Army and am just ole JW these days. And the other is I didn't think anyone meant it in any way. Just a clarification. I would add to your comment about you are lucky to know these coins, history and hobby, but you and me are lucky we know all these great guys/gals who have the same obsession as we do.
I don't have 12 Caesars but I got 12 guys. he true pleasure is to see an ancient coin and be able to remotely ID it. You have a huge leg up on the populous if you can do that. I am surprised that there are even ancient coins left in the market place the way you all buy them up like crazy. JW, no offence but you will always be sir, what a service, 33 years and a year in one of the wettest, hottest, snake infested places in the world. Even now I can't think of a worse place to fight a war. You might not want to be a sir but I must inform you, too bad...
Yah, I'm hoping that we're just a bunch of guys collecting coins and having a good time ... I like the 4 caesars
