Hi guys, My dad is putting together an Ike dollar set, when he asked me my opinion on this 71-S Ike. At first glance I quickly said Proof and went about my business confident in my assesment. But then I looked at his Whitman Classic Ike Dollar Folder and saw that the coin he asked me about was a double and not part of the set, so I looked through the folder and quickly retracted by Proof assesment and changed my verdict, asserting it as being a UNC (business strike). The reason: when I first saw the coin it definetly had a mirrored looking field (cloudy and not very reflective). But upon looking at his folder and the other examples of a 71-S Ike Proof and a 71-S Ike BU, I was left scratching my head. The BU 71-S in the folder was very mirrored and the Proof was reflective enough for a good shave. My knowledge of the Ike series is, well, lets just say lacking, so I throw this one to you, you Ike lovers. MUCH THANKS (from me and the parental unit)! The first 2 pics are the coin in ?. Here are the BU and Proof coins already in the folder
The first set of pics is a Proof Ike and from what i can see of your second pics, yes the first one is labeled correctly, the second one im not so sure about because of the angle of the pics. If indeed a business strike MS silver ike i would say a nice one but looks a little too clean they often came pretty beat up and would be easy to tell if proof or not. Post another pic of the coin straight on and you will get a definite answer.
After giving it a second look yes your dad has them labeled correctly and disregard my last comments it looks as though its a nice one too. You should take a look at that business strike and compare it to some MS65 or MS66 on eBay to see if its comparable, they can be worth something in gem grade. Not enough to sell the farm but enough to pay attention to though......
Thats because it is, I cant believe i missed that and actually even more amazing is the second proof pictured is also a peg leg.....:3three:
Please forgive my ignorance, I am familiar with the term peg leg as it relates to a "P" with a small(er) verticle line before the bottom horizontal line forming the "D" part of the "P" but I dont know if that is what you guys are referring to here. I will gladly post some better pics give me just a couple minutes.
No need we are refering to the lack of seriff on the R in LIBERTY, it makes it look like a pirates leg imo......
In case you want to know what they are asking for them on ebay...... http://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-S-Proo...35?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item460c527ed7
ok here be some more pics Ok here is another shot of the original coin in question. The more I look at it the more I am convinced as u guys are that it is a proof just not a great condition. I put my finger in the pic so you can see the mirror
Its definitely a proof you can tell not only by the mirror smooth surface but the superior strike and square rims......
Anyone have any rough ideas as to the values of these coins. I realize I didnt post any pics of the reverses but they are in comparable condition to that of their respective obverses? Much Thanks Guys!
