Went back to the LCS that i pulled 5 1981 SBA type 2 proof sets out of. asked to see all the 81 proof sets and found another! this one is toning up nicely! the quarter and the nickel have the type-2 mint marks as well. the last sets, only the SBA and dime were type 2.
I hear that proof set would be worth more if there were more of the coins using the same "clear S" mintmark. Is that true riff?
yes. if you can find one with all 6 type-2 MMs, it does make it worth more. they are rare though, and only the kennedy and cent demand much of a premium. the quarter is probably 6-7 bucks, the nickel, $2 tops. the kennedy is actually the rarest of the bunch by like 20,000 coins. 330,000 of the SBAs were minted, and i think 310k of the kennedys. but the SBA is still the meat of the value.
Congratulations! I found one of those (SBA and quarter only) at a yard sale for $2 once...kind wish I'd held on to the SBA. Sold it on eBay for $135...so I can't complain too much.
I really wish i could capture the toning better, but it is almost impossible while it is in its case. violets, blues, coppers, and gold.
i cant believe that only 330k were minted, and i found 6 of them in the same shop. this one wasnt in the half off bin like the other 5 though. i had to ask them if they had anymore in the back. they didnt seem to mind me whipping out my loupe and going through them, though.
