I was at the gas station the other night and got a blank planchet in my change! I own several blank planchets ... but this is the first one I've actually found on my own! Woo Hoo!

    In rolls recently - 2000 Wide AM, 1912 (G), 1916 S (G - a hair corroded), and about 35 Wheats. Nothing fancy - but the cherry picking's all good!

    They're still out there

New member. I have been following the forum for about six months and decided to post my results.

Last Friday (the 13th), I picked up a box of halves from my bank. After opening the box, I noticed the gleam of silver on the ends of a few rolls and decided to start with them. Found 6-1964 halves in the three rolls. Tore into the remaining rolls and found the following:

    47-1964 (total of 53-1964)
    2-1965
    2-1967
    3-1968
    1-1969

    Total of 61 :D

Immediately ordered another box of halves which I received late Friday the 20th and found 1-1964, 3-1965, and 3-1968 halves. Still better than the 2 to 3 40% silver halves I find in most of the boxes I have searched.

Also picked up a box of nickels and found an entire box of 2006D Jeffersons. Should I search the rolls for a nice BU or try to sell the rolls unsearched?

Not really unless they are in excellent shape; between Philly and Denver they made over half a Billion of them.

I went to the bank to order a box of halves and as always asked if they had any in the counting machine. There were $34 worth so I took them. I got 5 64s, 1 67, and a 2004-D. I hope the box was something good also.

Just finished searching a $500.00 lot of half dollars I got the local bank to order for me,I found a 1982s proof (deep cameo) in brilliant condition, six 40% Kennedy's, four 1964 Kennedy's and two Franklin halfs, 1962 and a 1951. I typically stop and pick up $20.00, ten $2.00 rolls of nickels to look thru daily M-F and run them back thru the local coinstar daily, minus my finds. I have found war nickels, 38's, 39's and every other year. I have only found two buffalo's but both had dates on them. Nickels have been the most enjoyable, cause you can almost alway's find something.

Just searched through 440 quarters straight from the bank.

    No pre-1965's.
    No S-mints.
    Not even any bicentennials!

What the fudge, did I get jinxed?!

Last weekend I had picked 80 dollars worth of mixed rolls. some cents, nickels dimes and quarters and didn't find anything of value other than some nice clean quarters, but no pre 64 items. So yesterday I turned in the coins at a bank and got 3 $20 bills back all in crisp shape. Looked at them and they were all 2004 in sequence. Talked with one of the guys that was with me who happened to get some money from the bank and he had the 2 previous serial numbers so I traded 2 of my other $20 from him so i could have a 5 sequence set. Figure I'll keep them for a little while. I'm sure theyre not worth anything over face, but its kinda neat none the less. Then I went to another bank and bought a bag of nickels and found 2 indian head's 1 1930 and 1 1936 and 97 pre 64 nickels. In my head I was like... WOO HOOOO... then I got to searching the net and realized I was sooooo dumb. Its the dimes and up that have silver from pre 64. The nickels aren't worth anymore than the ones made in later years. I am going to try to roll up a bunch of quarters that I don't need when I take back the nickels and see if I have enough to get a bag of quarters.

PS... I always ask the bank if anyone has turned in any silver dollars or any half dollars, but I noticed in a couple of the posts on this thread that mentioned getting the bank to order you some... How does that work. Do I just ask them if they can order me a roll or a bag or what? Do they have a minimum they will order? Do I just tell them that I wish to purchase... x amount? I just don't want to look stupid when I bring it up. Half the tellers look at me like I'm some kind of thief already when I ask to buy a roll of change. When I asked the teller friday if he had any bags of nickels he was like... We have some already rolled up if you want, cuz in the bag they are loose and I said yeah thats what I want. A loose bag. He said ok, then when he got done with my deposit he asked again. You do know these are loose coins right, not rolls. I just smiled and said yeah, thats what I'm looking for. I could almost hear him talking about me after I walked out. Oh well. I bet he doesn't have any indian head nickels either :) :) :) :)

    Dabalzak;

I use a little small town bank to get my halves. I just asked for $500 in halves and they sent a request to the main branch. The first 2 times I got rolls that they had in their vault. They had an OK silver ratio. After that they didn't have enough halves to send $500 worth so they started ordering a $500 box from the FED. The tellers there are all very nice and I've never had any problem having them order me as many halves as I want. I went in Thursday and the tellers had set aside 3 bicentennial IKEs for me and always ask if I got anything good in the last batch they got for me. I use a Credit Union that has a counting machine to cash-in the halves so that any halves the bank has in I know I haven't looked at yet.

    Fropa;

Do you return the halves that you do not wish to keep to the same bank/branch, or take them to another bank. I'm just curious if the same bank would get irritated.

Thank you for the information. I live in a small town as well, and my bank only has 2 branches. I have an account still at a chase bank in Louisville, but its over an hour away and we just keep a few hundred dollars in that account. I suppose if my small bank can't order them I could call the one in Louisville and have them order me some and then make a trip up there once in a while.

I don't know about Fropa, but every week I go through about 10 - 12 rolls of quarters. After I search through the whole thing I put them back in a 'mint bag' my bank gave me and bring them to the bank on the next Friday. Then at the bank I just tell the teller "could I exchange these for another 10 rolls?" and they take my bag and pour it into their giant commercial coin counter which counts out the whole bag in less than a minute, then the teller just reaches under his desks and puts 10 more rolls of quarters in my mint bag. I always tell the teller "thanks, and sorry if that was any hassel" and they always say something like "oh no, not a problem... have a nice day!" and I say "you too" and walk out of the bank.

All banks and people that work at them will obviously differ, but my bank is not hostile towards me when it comes to cashing-in/trading-in coins. Neither is the one my folks go to because I've had my mother take in a huge jar full of coins before and she said they didn't mind either.

The bank won't get mad at you, and if they do you should ask to speak with the manager or call the manager of the bank, because any time someone treats you like crap while they're getting paid to do their job - you have every right to complain about it.

Bottom line: don't be afraid of the bank, they won't bite or even bark at you.

I have difficulty getting the banks around here to order boxes of halves for me. I have accounts at three banks now just in the hopes that I can get one of them to reconsider. I'm desperate for boxes because I'm not the only searcher in the area.

At a couple of branches, they always seem annoyed when I ask for rolls of anything... like I'm putting them out of their way. It used to bother me, but then I thought about it. I'm a builder/handyman. If I go to someone's house to fix their kitchen sink and they tell me that there toilet is clogged up something nasty, well it's my job and how I earn my living, so take me to it and I'll fix it gladly... Same should go for them. So I don't worry about it anymore. I want coins.

This morning I went out on a roll search. I decided on a bank that I'd had fair luck at once before. I asked for half dollars. They had $3.50 loose and $170 in the vault. I said I'd take them all. They put the loose ones on the counter and there sits a 1967, a 1964, and a 1951 Franklin. I'm getting excited. Well, out of the vault comes the teller with 17 rolls. As I'm picking them up I notice dates written in pen on the side of about half of them. I've seen this guys work before and he's good... So I prepare to be disappointed.
I dig into one of the unmarked rolls. There's a few 40% in there. Check another... the same plus a Walking Liberty. At that point I decided just to check the dated rolls first and save the others for last. As suspected there's nothing in the dated rolls. So back I go to the others.

In the end I was very happy. I've never had a find even close to this before.

    4 - Walking Liberties
    2 - Franklins
    3 - 64 Kennedys
    2 - 65s
    6 - 66s
    28 -67s
    9 - 68s
    3 - 69s

It was a good day. I'm thinking of proposing to that teller next time I visit.

I take them to a different Bank/Credit Union to cash them in. That way when ever the bank has halves I know they aren't the ones I already checked. I would suggest you find a Bank/Credit Union that has a counting maching to get rid of them. The one I use has never had a problem accepting the whole $500 if I didn't find anything to keep. I took about $100 to a bank without a counting machine only once, needless to say they were not very friendly about taking the halves. Always be friendly to the people at the bank and things should go smooth.

That was a great find. I have never had any problem with my bank getting me halves. Whenever I go in and ask for $500 in halves they add that to their weekly change request from the main branch. It takes about a week to week and a half to get the halves, and they call me when they come in. I also take any halves they have on hand when I go in. And now they are setting stuff aside for me if they think I may want it, they are all really nice.

The problem my banks have with halves is that they pay an extra fee to get them in... and they don't like dealing with them either. I think I found a bank this weekend that will get them for me.

The issue of what will happen to the halves that I don't want also weighs on their minds. They don't want to have to pay to ship them back out too. I keep making the promise that whichever bank is willing to get them for me will never have to take them from me, but it doesn't seem to help too much.

    Now I found this. http://www.coinstar.com/us/WebDocs/A1-0-3-2

You can use CoinStar to load a prepaid MasterCard. The charge to reload is $4.95. So on a $500 box of halves you only lose 1%. This is a good deal to me as it costs me almost that much in gas and an hour and a half (round trip) in time to drive to the nearest bank branch that has a counting machine. The nearest CoinStar is less than 5 minutes away. You can then take your prepaid card to an ATM and withdraw the cash. Much better than losing 8.9% for the convenience of the instant cash voucher.

In the meantime, I have found that I can walk into any bank, even ones that I don't have accounts with, and they will sell me all of the halves that they have. So I have decided that I'm going to buy out every bank in the area... my experience is that the other collector knows this too and brings his coins in to them also. I have found his rolls at every bank I have checked. So I'll buy them all out. Get rid of them all through the CoinStar so that I know that I've gotten rid of all the overly recycled stuff, and hope for some more good finds and a fresh supply to build. After yesterday, I've realized that there's still good stuff around here, you just have to be ready to take everything to get to it.
