World Coins and Ancients?

I know I'm new here, but I was wondering what is the reasoning for the two of these categories being together on the same discussion forum? They have nothing to do with each other that I can tell. In my mind it's about the same as having stamps and US currency together. Does anyone know the reasoning?

Since the great majority of US collectors concentrate on US coinage, it's become traditional on most of the major US coin forums to split into US and non-US segments, which lumps world and ancients into a single category.

But they have nothing to do with one another. I guess the reason I ask is as an Ancients collector I have to weed through the world coins threads or vice versa (as might be said in Latin) for the world coin guys.

Maybe I'm wrong, but there are no American ancient coins. Is the traffic in that group that intense?

Its always been that way, even pcgs boards do it.

That doesn't seem like a good reason to me. Perhaps there is not enough posts in either category to warrant separation. But the fact remains that they have absolutely nothing to do with one another. Do those of you who collect Ancients participate in the discussions on World Coins? Or, once again, vice versa? I know next to nothing about World Coin collecting. Anyway, I was just asking. It was too quiet for a Friday night.

Just making a point thats how most coin forums I goto have it. NGC Boards are the same as all :p

But to answer a question, I participate in the world talk too. Several of us ancient collectors do.

Ive actually bought some modern world coins cause some others have shared theirs & I liked them enough to get an example.

Actually, there are other forums that split ancient from world coins. I think it's a good idea to separate the two. But then again, I'm new here too and it isn't up to me. I think it's a good suggestion though.

Actually, I'm a big advocate to get modern coin collectors interested in Ancient Coin collecting. Perhaps this is a good way to introduce others to these marvelous 2000 year old pieces of history and art.

To be honest with you, I prefer the two be together like this. If it wasn't I might not have gotten into ancients. I started off in foreign and US coins and had no interest in ancient coins when I started. Slowly but surely while surfing the foreign section I began looking and reading about ancients. This is one of the major reasons why I'm into ancient coins now.

Although I am having a great time randomly crashing through all of the threads in this section, it would be quite a bit more efficient if there were more sub-categories ...

However, it is quite efficient for me, because this section lumps Ancient coins with Canadian coins, so I have everything that I need crammed into one section ... it's a bit like living in one room that contains a fridge, a stove, a big screen TV, a comfy bed, and a toilet ... sure, there are a few obvious down-sides, but overall the whole concept seems to work!!

I love it when Brits post Lincoln cents and such in this section. It's so cheeky. ;)

If I were to make a distinction rather than World/Ancient, I'd prefer coins made to be spent separated from coins made to sell to collectors. I realize the need for a separate US section and I could even get into learning about US coins that we made to be spent. My personal tastes don't allow as 'coins' things that carry a denomination mark and are sold by the government for 100 times that amount (I can accept $2.10 for a 91 cent proof set but commemoratives and bullion weighing 5 ounces don't need to say 'quarter dollar' on them).

That said, it is not my place to expect Coin Talk management to customize the software to fit my individual whims. I'd sure that the original concept did not even consider ancients. I'm glad they let us tag along and assist modern collectors wishing to branch out a bit. There are a couple 'ancients only' venues but many beginners will never find them. It is good to have a place to be different and help others realize that there are options like ancients, tokens or anything that aids commerce. I'm not quite ready for opening our hearts to collectors of old credit cards or deposit slips (they exist). I'm liberal but not THAT liberal.

So, OP, what is the split between the two? End of Rome? End or Sassanids? End of Byzantines?

That is the problem right? I find it all a continuum, so i like early Mexican, medieval, and other subjects in with ancient subjects. Don't you nfind them all related anyway?

As a sometimes ancient collector - I could really care less about getting more people interested in them - competition is not a good thing! Even in ancients I collect some real darkside stuff with my Black Sea Greek colonies issues. I like them because they are from a part of the world that I am pretty familiar with, but that is off the radar for most collectors.

I don't think there is enough traffic to necessitate splitting out ancients from the world coins section here yet.

Ya know, it wouldn't matter how we did it, somebody would say that it should be, or would be better if we did it differently.

Some think there should be no end of different categories, that each and every subject should have its own category or sub-forum. They say their reasoning for this is because then things would be easier to find. Well yeah, they might be at first. But as more and more posts are made into each category the older posts get buried. That is inevitable.

But what they fail to think about is that if there were a sub-forum or separate category for each and every subject, then they would have to search/scroll through page after page just to find that category that they want. As the forum is set up right now, I have to hit the Page Down button 4 times just to see all of the different sub-forums that we have now.

If we were to split everything up into separate categories/sub-forums - where does it stop ? Do we separate out all ancients into their own categories - Roman, Greek, whatever ? Do we create a different sub-forum for each country ? Do we then break all of those down into separate categories based on denomination or metal type ?

If we even did part of that, then you would have to scroll through maybe 50 pages, or more, on the main Index page just to find the sub-forum that you want. Then somebody would complain about that. Saying it is too hard to find the category they personally are interested in.

Which brings us back to my first sentence.

Things are set up as they are because that's how we want them set up - at the present time. In years past, there wasn't even a separate category/sub-forum for World & Ancient coins because there was no need for one. I can remember that if Coin Talk, the entire forum not just 1 section, got a total of 8 posts made - that was a busy day ! Now, today, we might have a 1,000 or more posts made in just 1 day.

As the forum grew and we began getting more and more posts we added categories & sub-forums here and there. Sometimes we did it on our own, and sometimes we got requests to do it. But we never do it unless we feel, believe, that there is a real need for it.

Coin Talk has over 40,000 members. Does anybody think we can make all of them happy or set up the forum in a way that pleases them ? Of course not, it's impossible. But we do try and listen, and if enough people make a similar request, then we sometimes grant that request. How many is enough ? What do you think ? Is 10 people out of 40,000 enough ? Is 100 enough ? Well I'll tell this much, never in the history of CT has there ever been 100 people request the same thing, never even anywhere close to that. I can't even remember 10 ever requesting the same thing and I've been here since the beginning.

And you also have to think about this - we, the staff, still have to manage this place. And the more categories and sub-forums we create, the harder that gets. And it's not easy as it is now.

It's a fine line to walk, but we walk it. Will it change ? Most definitely, change has never stopped and it won't now. But we won't make changes just for the sake of making changes. Changes cause problems, glitches, bugs - call 'em what ya will. And then it takes a few months to solve all those problems. Managing a forum like this, one this big and one this busy is no easy task. We do the best we can do. And apparently we must be doing something right because CT has grown into the biggest and the busiest coin forum there is.

We hope to continue doing that ;)

Ummm, OK. Sorry I brought the subject up. It was a slow post Friday night and I thought.....never mind. I'm glad CT is here and I'm glad to be here.:foot-mouth:

NO need to be sorry at all. Pragmatically it was done because we had so few of each, there was no need to have separate ones. Maybe oneday that will change, but I enjoy reading about world coins just like ancients. Like I said, the cutoff point is ill-defined, so medieval to some might be ancient to others anyway.

Thanks med-man. I didn't mean to get anyone's dander up, As I said in my original post, I do not do "World Coins". I'm bad enough with Ancients. Even then I only collect Greek and Roman. So my categories of interest are even narrower. I was "thinking out loud" as one of the newer members. I certainly didn't mean to rock the boat.
