i have been trying to trade or sell this raw 72 D ike DDO-001/DDR-002 for a while now. i have seen its far more common brother 001/001 go for a few hundred slabbed MS-64. what grade do you think it would pull? if it wont make a 63, i dont know if i will bother with it. the obverse has some scratches in the SE field. if i dont see it making a 63 i will just put it in the closet and forget about it for 30 years.
What's the pop reports for the 002? I mean if top pop is low in numbers and a 63 would make top pop or even second top if numbers are low enough
wow. i read it wrong. it has a pop of 1 in MS-63. top pop is possible i guess! http://www.varietyvista.com/Variety Master Listings/eisenhower doubled dies.htm#_1972-D_1
Riff, CONECA pops are mostly meaningless as they have nothing to do with the true numbers of a variety. TPG pops are the same, but some will pay for top pops from a given company. Price often has a lot to do with moving inventory, as does demand. If confident the coin will grade out well, and then will be saleable at a level where submission was a wise choice, it may be the way to go. First, make sure that you've not been pricing yourself out of the market though.
It might get a details grade for the scratches in the SE field. Are those very fine scratches between Ike and 8 o'clcock? Chris
one thing i do like about this coin is that is dispels the myth the any doubling that looks flat is automatically MD. as far as pricing myself out of the market, im not even sure what the market is. like i said, i have seen the far more common(relatively speaking) 001/001 go up to the mid $300s. i cant find any record of 001/002 changing hands though.
If you've been trying to sell/trade for months without luck, you either have no found the right buyer (very possible with "niche" coins) or are asking too much. Another thing to consider is that with many things in life, coins are a popularity contest. If for whatever reason 001 is a popular variety, even if it is much more common than yours, it will likely (or at least can) sell at a much higher premium. Think of the so-called "keys" in popular series such as Lincolns, Mercs, Morgans, etc. None are anywhere close to rare, but mostly because of the popularity of the series, prices are higher to much higher than other, much more scarce coins. You may want to seek out those more familiar with Eisenhower varieties (19lyds, as already suggested, or IIRC, there is an Ike-only forum). I am not sure if either of the top two will slab this one or not, so the decision may be a relatively easy one. I know all too well how some view ANACS, but even with non varieties, their plastic can make coins more liquid. I've used their specials a few times to get what were slow moving raw coins out the door even though this was generally a break even move. People can say whatever they wish about buying the coin and not the slab, or about ANACS in general, but there are people out there who do place value on their plastic and will buy their coins over raw. If you are confident that you will at least recoup the submission costs, and that the coin will grade out (no problem) at an acceptable level, submitting may be the way to go since it will let potential buyers know exactly what variety they are buying. I believe what Chris is more concerned about is the marks/scratches in the southeast obverse field. Even if coin is otherwise gradable, these issues very well could get it bagged.
Although that is infrequent, I don't think it played a big part in this variety. The split serifs on the "S"s and the "P" distinguishes it as a true DD, and the demarcation line along the "P" is approx. the same height for both hubbings and not flattened. IMO.
so i posted a link to this thread on ike group yesterday http://forum2.ikegroup.info/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=1718 and got some really good help from the owner of this sitehttp://www.ikedollardoubledie.com/ it is 001/001. he had some really good markers for the DDR that are not on the coneca master listings. and i guess with the scratches, it could go anywhere from AU-55 to MS-60, 61 tops. here are a few pics of some of the doubling on LIBERTY:
no. but now that i know it IS 001/001, it shouldnt be too hard to get a bead on it. at this point, sending it in to get it graded and attributed isnt a top priority because i didnt pay for it(found it searching), so im not concerned about recouping any money. i may send it to variety vista just to get the letter.
