The books say there were a few 1971D and 1977D struct in silver clad composition by error, is there a simple test to tell the silver clad from the copper-nickel clad?

Sound or weight. It's pretty easy to tell the difference between silver and zinc by dropping it. In addition, I'm sure it weighs a different amount.

The silver clad halves weigh 11.5 grams, and the copper clad ones weigh 11.34g.

If you'll look at the reeded edge you will not see any copper if it is 40% silver.

There are no confirmed examples of 40% '71-D halfs. These have been rumored for decades.
