I really wasn't in the market for a commemorative, but while browsing them on GC, this one caught my eye.

It's one of my favorite designs. It was minted in 1892, 100 years before my birthday.

I love the reverse. The blue grey toning in the center reminds me of an old ship sailing in the stormy seas, and the rim is complemented with toning. The toning has also nicely filled in the boarders on the hemispheres.

Not the best pic, I will most likely send it in for a trueview. I paid $20 under pcgs price guide.

    Numismania You hockey puck!!

Using the CU guide as a referrence, and thinking that paying that amount is 'fair', you need to look up past prices on other auction sites. The CU guide is WAY high.....in most series. You might as well pay Redbook price.

I have rolls of them in my "strategic reserve" -they are sort of a neat 120+ year old way to have bullion.

  10. Looks like it has some nice color. Keep working on that photography.

I too like the old "look" of your coin. It looks like a 120 year old coin should look. It looks like it has been in grandma's coin jar for the last 50 years or so. It is not all bright & shiney or peacock colored.

Your new coin appears to be in a new PCGS holder. There is no need to crack it & have it "trueview" photographed & re-slabbed by PCGS. When you have the slab in-hand you could take more photographs & practice getting good photos through the slab plastic. What is the TPG grade?

BTW, I have some Columbian half dollars in my collection. I just handed a bright-white example to NGC at the FUN show. I just had to know a third party grade opinion. Also, I wanted to see if NGC would mount it with the ships facing forward. I'll let you know how NGC mounted it when it is returned.

Nice looking coin I have a couple of these all beat up that I got for bullion value but I've been meaning to buy a nicer version of each date 92-93. Probably work on picking them up once I find an Isabella quarter that I like and try to match them all eye appeal wise.

18 calendar days = pretty good

Yesterday (Jan 29, 2013) I received the tracking number from NGC. I gave NGC the coin at the FUN show on January 11, 2013. That equates to something like 18 calendar days for their 5-coin economy service tier. :smile

Wonder if I could get an Isabella for melt? :)

The 1892 was the year with the lower numbers, so it's worth a little more. It's also harder to find. I think $20 is a fair price for it in the condition you got. I know people got them around melt, but that was a couple of years ago. Not so easy to find now.

I like the OP coin. The obverse is average but the reverse is really nice.

    Photos upon request

The slabbed Columbian half dollar arrived today. It is mounted with Columbus facing forward so they didn't mount it ships forward as I had requested. I suppose that NGC would have done what I requested if there was some compelling reason to mount it ships forward (like toning or an error etc). That's just my guess.

There were two commemorative half dollars in my submission. I expected MS64 on both. The Columbian got MS63 and the other got MS65. (Yippee for the MS65 :smile )

I have a couple 1892s that I bought at melt about two years ago...they were $14.50 per at the time. About 6 months ago I turned down a roll from my dealer at $18 per in XF/AU condition. Wondering if I made a mistake in passing...
