Was wondering if a coin becomes more valuable if it wins COTY. I have a 2011 Mongolia Ural Owl that's up for COTY after winning most popular coin. The coin is selling on eBay between $600-725 recently. If it does win COTY, should I expect to see a jump in price? I know the Wolverine jumped in price after the hedgehog came out and I e-mailed the company that produces the Mongolia coins and they said they'd be showing the 2013 at the Berlin show. So I have 2 things going for this coin- New release of a new coin, and possible COTY. Are coins like these going to be long term gainers? Just wondering your opinions. Thanks.
A coin that is already "somewhat" expensive, such as this one, may well go up as, due to Krause's COTY Award, more people will be aware of the issue. I also think that, once a coin from a thematic series gets an award, future issues are more likely to be purchased by collectors. Then again, the "Most Popular" coin is just one of several categories. The "overall" Krause COTY is the Dutch Muntgebouw €5 collector coin. And I doubt that will go up in value. Christian
They've already announced the winner? I thought it wasn't until next week the announced the overall winner.
Unf prices will driven up as speculators grab it hoping to flip it up for quick profit but if you are holding for long run it's value will decline couple years down the road. Only few coins have retained this huge premium imo there shall never again be another Red back spider....
Man. Usually I like European issues, and believe coin design is better nowadays on that side of the poind than this side. Having said that, this may be the singularly most ugly coin I have ever seen. It has everything going against it, an ugly monarch, way too busy a design, conflicting motifs, just.........everything. Sorry Christian, (and I know you had nothing to do with this coin), but I seriously would not take that coin if given to me. I am already foreseeing coin nightmares just from viewing it once. Btw, that owl coin is really cool, its just not for me since I am not a believer in coins with non-metal objects attached to them. To me, I define a coin as struck metal, not with do dads attached, colorized, etc. That is just me though, and I agree its an extremely interesting design.
After I figured out what a Muntgebow is, I had to make sure you guys weren't serious... The direction it seems society is going nowdays, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if a coin with a QR code on it won.
Ah, I see it now on the mintnewsblog web site. "Most Innovative Coin" It's confusing because I seem to find different coins on different web sites. Maybe some of those are from 2012...
There's 10 finalist, each with their own category and of those 10 one winner is chosen for COTY. Like my owl won most popular coin.
The way Krause's COTY works is, they pick several coins for each category, then some jury votes for the category winners, and ultimately an overall winner is picked. The decision is made some time in the year "n", and the coins need to be from the year before ("n-1"). However, the winners do not get their awards until the World Money Fair in the following year ("n+1"). So at this year's WMF (which was on 1-3 February 2013), the "participating" coins, and the winners, were all from 2011 ... Admittedly I do not care much about what pieces they pick. After all, pretty much every winner is a surcharged NCLT piece. As far as I know, they have only one category (called "BestTrade Coin") with coins that you may actually come across in circulation.
