Realistically how hard would it be to collect every coin minted in the 1900s? Im missing 2 Lincoln's (14d, 09svbd) and seen a post that someone had the entire collection of all coins issued for circulation. I'm not looking to complete a BU set. I just think it'd be cool to say I have every coin minted in the 1900s although no one in my family cares about coins. I still think it'd be a nice thing to have. Also I'm not looking at gold coins as I'm not rich lol what are your thoughts?
I am going for this! Of course, I'm the same as you, not wanting the top-notch coins, just enough to say you have it. I'm quite a ways away from completing this goal, so I think I'll try to accomplish Roosevelt dimes first; they seem pretty simple to collect, considering there are no big changes with them.
The gold coins was the first thought that came to my mind when I spied the title of this thread. And then all of the commem's.........tis a ponderous task and one not so easy.
My very conservative WAG is that between the 1904 Afghan Paisa and the 1996 Zimbabwe $10 the Standard Catalog lists something far north of 100,000 different coins, even disregarding the multiplicity of mintmarks.
I guess I should have said US coins. I figured since I put it in the US forum I just assumed everyone knew I was talking about the US mint. But I'm glad I'm not doing world coins. 100,000 coins would be one heck of a collection!
If your just talking standard US coins, no commems, bullion or gold, you won't have much trouble. The key dates will cost you some bucks, but I personally don't mind having a few holes in the albums. A few recommendations for anyone who wants to take on this type of collection: Buy bulk lots of Mint & proof sets for your moderns, ideally in complete runs. ie; 1968 through 2012 would be a great start. Buy complete sets of Wheat Cents, Jefferson Nickels, Mercs, Roosies & Franklins. The Kennedys, Ike's, SBA's, and all the modern dollars will pretty much be taken care of with your Proof & Mint sets. You can buy partial sets of Indians, Walkers, Buffs, & Peace Dollars for a pretty decent price. A lot of the Barbers can be had in bulk lots for melt. The SLQ's & Washingtons are two that I haven't done much with, but they're pretty easy. AND POOF, you're off to a real STRONG start..... Just fill in a few holes and forget the keys. LOL
I know there's going to be some key dates that will require quite an investment. Most of the dates can be had for very close to spot as they're being sold for junk silver. I think ill get a $10 Indian for the gold coin as those are my favorite gold coin. I want to include the half dollar comms as the majority of them are such beautiful coins. I'm still looking for a nice Oregon Trail coin. I just really like the indian on the coin. The local shops want $150 for a circulated version. Don't know if I want to buy one from eBay as the pictures can be very deceiving. I did make my first comm purchase a few months back. It has been dipped but the details on it were amazing. Couldn't pass it up. Was between an AU Lincoln Comm half or the 1934 half. I went with this one. Happy to add it to my collection.
Wow. Just checked those 2 of eBay. I'm going to need to win the lottery or save for a very long time! Who knows maybe ill get lucky searching one of those unsearched rolls on eBay! LOL
As I was searching Dansco albums I came across the 7070 type set. I might have to get one of these going!
1916 Quarter, Good- $3,250 1923-S Quarter, Good-$280 1921 Quarter, Good- $175 1916-D Dime, Good-$1,000 1921 Half Dollar, Good-$150 1921-D Half Dollar, Good-$325 1903-O Dollar, Good-$310 1903-S Dollar, Good-$205 1928 Dollar, Good-$350 As you can see, there are several keys that will set you back. I think you would be much better off putting together a 20th Century Type Set, No Gold.
BT444 - even for a dipper the half above is a beaut! I love the Texas commems myself and have one in MS-67. I don't collect the commems for the whole series, I just like the ones with the most history or the eye appeal. The Oregon Trail is another one of those that I hope to find in 67 - it is just a gorgeous coin that commemorates a lot. My other favourite is the Illinois Centennial from 1918, it is a bit off the radar but has an early portrait of Lincoln and a variant of the eagle on the reverse that is very very similar to some 1870s era patterns that the US mint made.
