I can think of 4 British Commonwealth countries that had a gorilla or a monkey on a coin; Cook Islands 2003 1c. Kiribati 2003 5c. Nigeria 2003 1 Kobo. Somaliland 2002 20/-. Are there any others? Aidan.
I think of Gibraltar 5 pence KM# 22 and 22a, 22b, 22c, 775 and 25 new pence (crown) KM# 5 and 5a. Image is from worldcoinsgallery.
Bart,I had forgotten to mention that Gibraltar also has monkeys on coins. You've got a 5p. shown there. There is also the 1971 25p. crown. Hong Kong also has a monkey on a coin - the 1980 gold $1,000 piece.I wonder if Canada has ever depicted a monkey on any of its $15 medal-coins. Aidan.
Gxseries, thank you for reminding me about Singapore's coinage issues. BTW,China isn't a British Commonwealth country. Aidan.
From Malaysia: Endangered species series. 1) 25 sen 2003 - orang utan (pongo pygmaeus) 2) 25 sen 2003 - proboscis monkey (nasalis larvatus)
Aidan, these 2 coins are from the Endangered Species first series. The 2nd series was issued in 2004 featuring birds and this year the 3rd series depicts marine reptiles.
no, New Zealands wasnt a 'Year of the Monkey' coin, it was a $1 coin, although they might have a YotM coin too.
