This? I can't find a reference to it anywhere, & wouldn't figure China would produce something like this today, there's so little meat on the bone for a worn out 2 reales. The font on the reverse text looks different than most others I've seen, but I haven't by any means seen them all- especially another 1869 Go Y.F. The snake's tail also sits entirely inside the field under the wing- something else I haven't seen on similar coins. I haven't received the coin yet, so I know I'll have more to tell you then, such as silver sound, diameter, and weight. It looks to have been in the cardboard for a long time. Pd ~$12 on the bay from someone stateside with good feedback. Any perspective would be appreciated, and trust me- I don't have my hopes up that this is a one of a kind- probably fake but for $12 I thought I give it a shot.
Wow. Looks real to me. 1869 / 2 realies/ Guanajuato mint is not listed. Last one 1868. Wow, could be unique. Let me know if it weighs out and diameter is correct. Here is my 1860's era 2 realies for comparison. Note that the tail is also under the wing, like yours.
Many local mint variations. There was revolution in Mexico in 1869 against the Juartez government in Zacatecas and San Luis Potosi and other places. Records could be missing. I like the coin. .
I'm not familiar with mexico's die making process at all, but it looks like the six was just inverted to make the nine- a simple thing to do if the dies were punched with the numerals. If it were real, you'd think there would be more out there- and if it were fake you'd think the same thing! One of a kind, huh? Can't wait for it to arrive! If it is a plausible weight and diameter should I send it to PCGS, NGC? which would you recommend for this kind of thing? And how could they determine if it were a contemporary fake vs. a one off/low mintage? Records that have disappeared? This is why I love collecting, world coins especially- you get to learn a lot!
Ok asuming it's real, can anyone explain the "higher metal" marks around the eagle's wings where the meet the fields, and on the other side between the R and G and across the 1&8 in the date, and of course the one under the hat? Could it be struck over another coin, or are these tell tale signs of a counterfeit process? The more I look at it the more I think a magnet is gonna stick right to it.
Why would the Chinese copy this coin? It's probably worth around it's weight in silver. I think the Mexican silver reales are really cool, but I've bought them at melt price a bunch of times, so they aren't going to be a high value coin. I never trust trade dollars and CC's, but Reales, sure.
Totally different letter styles, and numerals, I doubt it. See if there is a P mintmark (For Peking) or easier a C for China.
Arrived today! I immediately got my magnet and set it on the package before I opened it...it didn't stick. Opened it, There's an old chipboard box inside, put the magnet on that, still no sticking. Open that, there she sits still not magnetic! Calipers say 27.25mm, close to the 28 listed. The scale says 6.34g, close to the 6.76 of an unworn coin. Looking at the surface it is not pitted, but has the look of old silver, sort of rainbow toned under the right angle of light- definitely a legit surface! Being the first 2 reales I ever seen in hand, I don't know what the edge should look like, but it's got c shaped ridges- I'll find out if that's normal pdq. Then I suppose It's off to NGC after I get enough money saved up to join! Any guesses as to value of coin to insure on shipping?
