Howdy folks, What are your feelings about selling surplus mint products? For example, over the last 10-15 years, I've been buying extra sets from the mint and am thinking about selling some in exchange for coins that I collect. I have a couple of good dealers here in Lansing, MI - both honest and I've dealt with them for years. I realize that I will take a hit on the vigorish (spread between wholesale and retail), but I could 'trade' some of my duplicates for other coins this way and not impact my cash flow (would that I could just afford everything). This would also free up some storage. thoughts? thanks, rono
Rono, I am all for "eliminating" duplicates in the collection in order to buy needed coins. I actually recently listed a few duplicates myself on ebay. So I say go for it! Have you thought about ebay at all? If you have experience with ebay you could probably make out much better listing them there. Good luck!
Before you sell them anywhere else, you should ask for a rough estimate of what you got there. Chances are that the prices are roughly the same that you bought directly from the mint but there are cases that some mint sets have risen considerably for them. Do ask more questions before you sell! Hurts to know the real value after you sold them.
selling dupes Yeah, I'm going to be very careful with what I receive. I don't really want to sell much that's still at 'face'. In this case I've got a couple of Ben silver $ in BU that I can peddle. Same goes for other winners that I've hit, albeit accidentally. And that's why I try to buy a couple of most everything they issue - you never know when it's going to be a 1999 silver proof set, or a 2001, or the Marine Corps $ or the Ben. My dealers are good and I have a good relationship, so I know I'll get a decent grey book price and they let me cherry pick their holdings, so I get good coins that fill gaps. Besides, when dealing local, I can actually look at the coins and get what I want. thanks, rono
Just my own humble opinion, but the last paragraph means more to me than the money. Viewing the coins makes a big difference. Plus - it would never hurt to ask if they might give a little more in trade value than cash. You just never know.
