I bought a proof set of the 2005 Westward Series nickels from an ebay dealer. Oddly, the two proof nickels in the sealed plastic holder have a blueish tint...fairly dark, almost indigo tint, on both the coins when you examine it under the light. Any idea what this is? Can there be toning on a coin that is only a year old and has been sealed in the mint holder?

Does anyone know what this is and/or if it affects the value of the coin?

    Thanks,

    Andy

Some folks pay a premium for it. IF it is an even toning ecspecially. I have heard tons fo reasons for this toning form when i was researchign the ones I found. They are gorgeous. You may want to search under black beauties and blue nickles to see the old threads.

Dependong on how pretty it is you may have hit the jackpot. There are some who will pay rediculous money for well toned moderns.

edited to add: As long as they are naturally toned and not "created" by skilled con men then they will carry a premium.

i wouldn't pay ridiculous amounts for toned normals, but i would pay a premium for them ;)

P.S. Youve chosen a handle very similar to a current member's. He is not the kind of guy that I would want to be mistaken for, you may want to change yours before you get too many posts on this account. In fact, as a matter of courtesy, you may want to change it.

Thanks for the name-change tip Cave Troll, I think I did see the original airedale on here on a different post and thought "What are the odds of that."

In fact, as a matter of courtesy, you may want to change it. This sounds much better. Thank you for noticing.
