Here is a 1943D war nickel I inherited into my collection. On the reverse, to the right of monticello and visible to the naked eye is something that looks suspiciously like a "D" mint mark. I'm aware this is unlikely, but I'd like some opinions on what this could be. Thank you very much in advance!

I am not seeing what you are describing. It is a well worn nickle so there may be inconsistencies on the surface.

I know we all love to find coins "that aren't supposed to be", but in this case what ain't supposed to be, isn't.

I see that little nub thing by Monticello. I can't think of how this error could have been made. I personally don't think an engraver would make a mistake like that.

It has a lot if wear so most likely PMD in a much better condition it would be easier to tell

Pareidolia - the tendency of one's brain to interpret random marks or patterns as something familiar. In this case, your brain interpreted stray marks on your coin as a familiar 'D' mintmark.
