Hello, this is my first post to a forum so I hope that this question makes sense to someone. Today I acquired a large Chinese coin with a dragon on one side and the inscription Szechucn Province One Tael on the opposite side. I looked in my copies of the Standard Catalog of World Coins for both the 19th and 20th century and could not locate this coin. The coin has a large diameter, larger than most crown-size coins and appears to be made of copper-nickel, although it could be silver turned gray. After being unable to locate it in the catalog I began to suspect it might be counterfeit since Szechuan was spelled Szechucn. I did find a similar One Tael coin from one of the other provinces in the catalog but nothing in the Szechuan section. Can anybody shed any light on this, including what it might be worth? It looks to be a really nice EF45 with no rim bumps, major marks, spots, cleaning, or any other problems. I paid the grand sum of $5 for it at a flea market. Thanks!
no digital camera unfortunately Sorry, I can't post a photo. I don't have a digital camera! (I think I spent my camera money on coins)....
You know, Chinese coins are extremely prone to counterfeit. If you got it for 5 bucks, well chances are that it's too likely to be one unfortunately.
