    Pilkenton almost uncirculated

Cents, Nickels, Dimes, Quarters, Halves, and Dollars.

Of all these denominations, which is the rarest and most expensive to purchase of each?

The following order from least amount to most: cent for 1c, nickel for 5c, dime for 10c, quarter for 25c, halve for 50c, and a dollar for well... 1$... Not sure about the rarest though :)

A complete set of each denomination? Are we counting varities?

    Straight sets, my guess would be,in order;

    Dollars
    Quarters
    Cents
    Halves
    Dimes
    Nickels

This is not counting fantasy issues like 1804 dollar,1913 lhn, etc.

I imagine the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel would be the most expensive of that denomination. As for the rest, I'm guessing it would have to be the earliest coins in the highest grades.

  6. Whoops, thanks for the clarification John Anthony.

I think he's asking about the rarest coin in each denomination. Or maybe not...

What, no half cents in there, try to find a no pole 1796, or any 1796 for that matter

In the small cents it's gotta be the 1856 Flying Eagle right? Or was that considered a pattern piece? But it did circulate.

The rarest and most expensive dime has to be the 1894-S Barber Dime.

There has been at least one 1793 cent and a 1795 reeded edge cent that have broken the Million dollar mark. The nickel is easy, the 1913 V Nickel, record is $5M. Dime I think is the unique 1873-CC no arrows at $1.84M, oops no the 94-S went for $1.9M. Quarter so far the highest I've seen is $535K for a proof 1897. Half dollar try $1.38M for a 1797. And the Dollar is easy a 1794 for over $7.2M

I still don't think the 1913 V nickel should be included as a coin, as it wasn't struck legally as currency, nor is it monetized as such. As for the rest, I agree with Conder's list.

If you don't like the 1913 nickels then it drops a LOT. Best I can find is $173K for a 1916 DDO buffalo nickel.

Thats just my opinion, Conder. I know many include it as a part of that series however.

This question is too open-ended. Do we count errors, varities, patterns?
