Good evening guys and gals, I am looking for any ideas on what caused the damage to this Peace Dollar from 1928. I realize these are key date coins but what in the world caused this degree of surface damage. Under a loupe every square inch of the surface is afflicted with some sort of gash or pock mark, as if it had seriously been in a rock tumbler. After assessing the damage, can anyone give a value for such a coin. This is my duplicate and I may be open to letting this one go after I determine a value for it. Thanks
Ill take a look when my truck gets returned to me. I left them in there after the coin shop and my girlfriend borrowed my truck for a bit, so im at her mercy for now. Honestly i never thought about a slot machine, but I do remember looking at the coin last night and thinking how anybody would be able to clean that coin and have that effect evenly on both sides of that dollar. The coin overall looks like it wouldve went VF-XF without all the pock marks, but now its no better than a G condition
I am suspicious of the area where a mint mark is normally. It appears possible that a 'S' might have been removed. I can't tell from the photo
You werent the only one who has said that, when I first brought it to my coin dealer he said that sometimes counterfeiters would mutilate the main portion of the coin to take focus away from the altered area. Having said that though, he said there werent any signs of a mint mark being removed. That was after he looked under a loupe. Now keep in mind that doesnt guarantee the mark wasnt removed, a good coin doctor couldve concealed it well enough to pass it off, but his professional opinion as a reputable coin dealer was that the coin was genuine. Now, if you are using google chrome, when you click on the picture it opens a window to gophoto and an option to view the original which allows a closer zoom. After doing that, I didnt really see anything in the picture where a MM wouldve been altered, but thats just me. Try and see if you can get it to zoom in that close for you.
Reeding looks normal for its age and typical wear, still has nice ridges, not smooth like you see the Kennedys
You may very well be right, I know theres alot to consider when grading Peace Dollars, i believe they were notorious for having weak strikes. I dont know that much about them myself and was just giving a ball park on the grade, at this point my main concern is the authenticity and whether I can squeeze a few dollars out of this coin to put elsewhere in my collection
I was trying to avoid slabbing on this one, I actually took it down to my shop for that purpose and he didnt seem to think it was worth slabbing. Hes also not the type to send much in for grading so its actually work for him to package mine up and send them off. This might be one I wait for ANACS to have a special and submit through them just for authentication purposes. That will at least let me know if its real or not, i dont think the Details grade is going to make much difference on the dollar i get back from this.
It's a filler type coin, but more saleable once deemed genuine. I don't think it will be easy to sell without the certification.
Me either, I may just bundle some of my other cleaned coins and ship them off to ANACS for a genuine slab in case I want to sell them. I have a beautiful AU/BU SLQ that would be beautiful in an NGC slab, but my dealer said she looked cleaned so I guess off to ANACS she will go too! Wait for one of their 5 for $ deals to come up and just send me a batch in. Thanks for the advice though, I appreciate you taking the time to chat about this coin
Yeh, this one cries out for a slab , even though it is a problem coin. I think once in a details/ genuine slab from Anacs/ PCGS. NGC it would be worth $100-150, say $125, without the slab $50 seems more like it....so I'd slab it on some special deal and ebay it.
Well I was a little off on my assessment, I was thinking the $200 range myself, but I definitely think someone can appreciate it filling a Dansco hole for a good price. I would much rather use the money I make off it and try to find a better coin I would enjoy more, and obviously this is the lower quality of the 2 that i own, the one in my Dansco is XF maybe AU on a good day, but it looks like it was dipped and the 'new' toning looks almost like faded gold plating to me.
