I was searching ebay when i stumbled upon this. Could it be real? http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-1943-COPPER-PENNY-CENT-GENUINE-WHEAT_W0QQitemZ130036452934QQihZ003QQcategoryZ39457QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
No. The 3 has been altered. Its shape isn't quite right and it's too far away from the 4...Looks like maybe an altered 1948 penny...
43-8 In the darker pic the 3 has a distinct shape of an 8, and like sandler said it is to far from the 4.
bids And the bid is up to $100 for a coin worth 1 or 2 cents!:headbang: At least he put the question mark in his listing so he is not claiming outright that is authentic. I also noticed most of the bidders have very few transactions. Could be a hard lesson for a beginner.
The only thing that is missing here is that he hasn't made the bidder IDs private...which could indicate that he honestly doesn't know that it's fake, even though the description kind of hints at it. I just sent him this message: This is not a 1943 copper penny. It's been altered in some way; not necessarily by you, but maybe by someone who had it before you. The shape of the 3 isn't right, and it's too far away from the 4. This was probably a 1948 penny until someone rubbed off part of the 8. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but leaving this penny up for sale even after you know that it's fake is VERY dishonest. And this is how he responded: i dont know that its fake its very possible that that is what happened im not a hundred percent sure thats why its on there as is it does appear to me that it could possibly be a 1943 odds are it isnt but thats why im not guaranteeing it real or authentic but thanks for the info
http://cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=1484 Does the coin pass these tests? If you're not sure it will, don't bid!
I just sent him an email asking him to please pull the auction because it didn't look to be real---I told him that it would also make more "cents" to pull it anyway because if it was real and he could prove it the coin would be worth alot more. Speedy
It's fake for sure, If he had any doubt at all it wasn't fake, it would surely be on its way to a TPG, not on ebay for a hundred bucks. I have 1 of each, found in lot searches, a cu plated steel, and an altered 48. Sure would be nice to find a real one though.
This is just another reason why everyone should research everything they plan on bidding on on ebay. The biggest red flag telling people that he knows that this coin was not real was in his description, when he spell it out " the sale will be final no return". Rule #1 when bidding on ebay: When a seller refuses to take back an item, don't bid on the Item. Rule # 2: if it's too good too be true, then it is.
I do report bull like this and some times ebay will pull the item but most of the time the auction ends before they can do anything and then it is up too the bidder too file a complaint.
