It depends. If you also have to factor in a credit card fee and shipping, you can do better. ASEs typically sell for about $4.00 above spot. Spot is currently in the high $31.00s. That would put a decent price for an ASE, paid for in cash with no shipping fee in the high $35.00s.

if you are just buying a couple, your price is not bad, but if you are buying a lot, you could do better, if that is a cash, no shipping price.

I would say that's decent for 4 and especially since the Mint is out til later this month. Personally I would pay $40 for one right now just to fill my hole in my album.

That isn't that unfair considering you only want three. If that includes shipping go for it.

You should be able to get SEs at your local shop for that. It's always an advantage building a good relationship with a trusted local coin/bullion shop. Cash is the way to go.

My Local Coin dealer is pretty awesome, very knowledgeable and lots of nice coins in stock. However he is a bear to bargain with. He's known all 3 generations of collectors in my famiy and we all still have to pay market price + premium on EVERYTHING. Like literally everything. There is no buying ASEs at spot + $3, and definitely no junk silver at spot. He charges for everything including the air you breathe when you walk into his shop.

I still buy from him consistently, but I do also shop around for my more common stuff.

Why would you go to him then? What does he charge you for junk?

I paid a little less than that on my pre-order, but now when I look at the same site they are $36.93 each. Somtimes its good to just get those pre-orders in; because dealers want a quick return at first, then they'll bump up the rest of the coins they're sitting on.

Also Aydin Coins and Jewelry Co. is big on eBay. They usually have an auction ending every couple of minutes. You might be able to get a deal on one of those versus a Buy It Now.

i go to him because he's really a nice guy, just a shrewd business man. He pretty much has the local market cornered around here and can name his price on what he wants. So last time I checked he's got junk silver at $28.50 per $1 FV, which is a terrible deal in my opinion. But I just switched to buying proof silver statehood quarters as my 'junk' and he's only charging me $37 out the door which is as good if not better than eBay plus no waiting for packages to arrive. Honestly I mostly just use him as my supply shop, buying albums, roll tubes, 2X2s, and occasionally a piece of silver or 2.

Here's my question on this, if the mint is selling them for 45.95, how are people getting them for less at other places? Wouldn't those businesses be losing money selling them for less, especially this early into the year?

these are the bullion version silver eagles, they sell them to the distributors for $2 over spot per coin. (that's what i've heard, and it does seems to add up) Since some distributors sell for $2.59 a coin over spot on monster box purchases.

There is a cash for gold place in my area who has a bunch of them and they only add a $2 premium for ASE's.

Okay, that makes sense. I guess I will look around the web for a decent price then. Thanks for quick response.

I'd recommend Provident, they are selling them for about 3.49 over spot if you buy 1-19, 3.19 over spot if you buy 20-99, 2.89 over spot if you buy 100-499, 2.59 over spot if 500+

I believe those are likely the lowest prices on eagles out there, and they also have lower shipping than most dealers. Here's a link: http://www.providentmetals.com/2013-1-oz-american-silver-eagle-bullion-coin.html

For bullion eagles, yes. That's $5 over spot which is a normal mark up.

Since the Eagle is primarily a bullion coin and silver today is only $31.40 (at this time, per Bloomberg TV) an ounce, I would say no and I would pass, if I was looking for bullion coins.

Alternatively because some people either get confused about the difference between a legal tender coin and a bullion coin and others view the many varieties of Eagle being minted today as art works (rather than remembering bullion is made for melting) some people (foolishly in my opinion) often pay way, way more than the prices you quote.

Agree. I have a guy locally who has them at spot +$4. He always has a good selection, he sells a lot of them as gifts.
