When I worked at the bank, I would search and save any $1 star notes I could find and I would save anything else of interest and buy it for my collection at face value. Well, just about all these notes are low grade circulated notes. Many of them never made it into my binder and most have spent the last 5 years sitting in bank envelopes. Last night, I want though the bulk of them. Any that were low printed notes I kept and the rest went into a "spending" pile. I think I'm going to put them towards one or a couple nicer pieces for my collection. I'm kind of excited. Currently, I have $269 to reinvest and by the time I am finished I will probably have around $280. I also probably have $100 or so in change to cash in. I figure I could put nearly $400 towards a note or a couple notes of some kind. So, here is my question. I'm looking for opinions of note types to search for. I already have a few candidates...but I want some other opinions. I don't want to hear that old "buy what you like" statement. I want to see what notes you recommend and see if any of them peak my interest.
Love fractionals, but the increase in value for them compared to most other notes is low. Educational notes have been skyrocketing.
Obsolete notes: particularly 1850's-1880's have the best vintage and art/design. Many different states/counties to choose from not to mention denominations. Also not to be over looked are late 1800's/early 1900's large size Canadian notes. Very eye appealing with interesting and attractive designs. Heritage has alot in their archives to view.
I was considering an Education note, but with my current budget I'm not sure if one could be had in a grade that I want. I don't want to buy a rag. The Education notes that I have seen push the budget at a grade that is right at the base of what I want. I was hoping to pick up a couple notes with the budget...but one nice one might be OK.
To show some members that may not be familiar with an Educational note. I hope to eventually afford the $2 and $5 versions.
I'm looking at a $1 Education right now in the F-VF range and they are asking $395. I might jump on it...I haven't decided yet.
Well, I decided to purchase a couple notes. So much for the $400 budget...it's actually coming closer to $600 but that's OK. I have emailed the dealer and once I get conformation that the notes are still available I will post what they are.
OK, I have spoken with Prof. Kelly and he has both notes still available and I have purchased them. So, I will go ahead and show you what I have bought. I'm using the photos off his website as the notes aren't in hand yet: 1896 $1 Education Note, Bruce-Roberts (this signature combination is about 5x rarer than the other according to Kelly). Grade F-VF 1917 $1 US Note, Speelman-White. Grade EF-AU
