Can anyone give me the run-down on the 5 oz silver quaters

other then being called hockey pucks and anacs and pcgs will both now slab em not much else i can say.
Myself I see them as fancy bullion.

 

The pucks are great looking coins but as far as I know nobody is making any money off of them anymore. They came out with a vengeance in 2010 and I thought they were gonna be really popular but ASE's are alot better to own as far as liquidity goes. jmho

 

The Hawaii collector version just sold out at the US Mint yesterday. The 4 others from 2012 will be soon to follow. Underappreciated in my opinion. TC

 

I bought one of the Vicksburg's when it came out. I bought mine because I thought that they would not be very popular in the hopes that one day they would be rare and valuable. That day is not here yet, but I'm not surprised as the series is still being issued and it's only been a couple years. I've read that the number being issued for mintage is lower now then even the first year at 33,000. I'm not completely sure on that statement because I read it on the internet but I would hold onto yours if you have one. I really like this series for it's unique size and because they have a face value of 25 cents yet contain 5 oz($150) in silver. They're strange and different and not alot of people are buying them, also they're issued in plastic holders and that helps keep them in good condition, all that could turn into a nice profit some day but if not I still have 5 oz of silver.

 

I personally think they're interesting as a curiosity, but they're not really a coin. You're basically buying bulk silver that happens to be in a shape other than a brick. That being said, some of the quarter designs are really well done and it's much easier to appreciate them in the larger form factor.

I have decided not to buy them frankly because I just don't have the storage space...

 

I would buy these 5 oz coins if they were some original and unique design - but copying a quarter down to even using the denomination is pure lackluster to me.

 

I agree that these "coins" could benefit from an original design. When I received my coin and took my first look at it, what jumped out at me is how awkward the portrait of Washington looked blown up so large. The reverse designs, for what it is, look good in large proportion. I don't think these "coins" will ever be popular with the majority of coin collectors, but for me it's nice to have something that very few others have, also I LOVE silver.

The thing with a current, continuing series such as this is today's key date can easily become tomorrow's common date, as there are 41 more coins to go.

I own a number of these, but I just buy the designs I like. When I do this, I know I will not be disappointed in the future regarding my purchase and the mintage numbers become irrelevant. If I happen to hit a low mintage coin, that's great. If I don't, I still have a design I like.

 

So I guess thee have been no home-runs yet in this series

 

Stay tuned. The US Mint had the 2013 collector pucks scheduled on the product schedule with specific release dates but as of yesterday have now moved them to a to be determined list at the end of the product schedule. Interesting development. TC

Also, an interesting fact about these is that there is a matte proof collector version (buy it from the mint) and a MS version (buy it from APMEX.) Didn't know that until yesterday....

Hawaii is the only one I glad to see it sold out so quick. not sure if that is a good thing but perhaps there are other likeminded folks, the design in aweseome!

The Hawaii P-Pucks are red-hot, $350+ raw. I remember thinking about buying more but they went up to $230 and I backed off. Good fortune to those that bought extras...:thumb:

I like the Hawaii ATB bullion version as well. There only made 20K of them, and you can still find them reasonable priced (under $200)...at least for now. TC
