I just picked these up and thought i would share the first one from the Series 681 Fractional series depicts the image of the submarine from the bureau of engraving and Printing also gives a brief history also have included one of mine to show the Complete note
You piqued my curiosity with this thread and I wondered if there were other souvenir cards that depicted portraits or scenes also used on MPCs. In fact there are a number of them, but I never made the connection because I hadn't seen images of some of the fronts/backs of the later series. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think any MPCs were intaglio engraved. So the cards are about the only way to obtain the original engravings. The souvenir card you posted is B244 from the set issued by the BEP in 2000. There's another card in this set with an image also from MPC Series 681 -- the $10 note. This card is B246. The note is not mine, I only post it here for comparison. I know the two Indian chiefs that appear on the high value MPCs in Series 692 can also be found on souvenir cards. There is one portrait from Series 692 and I believe one back from Series 701 that also appear on cards. These are all high ticket notes, so they are seldom seen, but I will try to find and post matching images.
I was going to post this one in a different thread but since you have it there i will post My Series 681 $10 in 69PPQ (which has a population of 1) and the bottom part of the Card not sure if you have that or not? Also if you do happened to find additional souviner cards please let me know
Nice note! And apologies if I stole your thunder. So I did a comparative inventory last night of how many MPC images also appear on engraved souvenir cards. I was pretty surprised -- by my count there are more than a dozen, including two MPC designs with cards that match both front and back. One set is the small denomination 681 series; you posted the 25¢ above. The back side appears on souvenir card B36 issued in 1976. The astronaut is flipped on the card, but it's the same image. This is a very cheap card btw, you can probably find one for $3 to $5. I'm going to try to compile hi-res images of all these matching sets and will post a separate thread when I pull it together. I don't generally collect MPCs, but it's not too hard to find images online. Thanks for the inspiration!
Not the ones I've seen firsthand-- which, admittedly are low denominations. Mpcusa, do you know if the higher value notes were engraved?
All MPC is lithographed. The only step in MPC production involving intaglio printing is in the design stage.
That would be accurate as far as the design,s go and the birth of the images just wondering how Many they made
