Well, I got a phone call today from my sister who had came across some old coins and she wanted to know if I wanted any. I assumed she came across them at her work so I told her to get any that she could. She called me back later and told me that she had "bought" them for $40...I suddenly got worried because as it turned out she had been at a pawn shop and doesn't know that much about coins. So, I kind of felt bad because I did tell her to get any she could (not knowing the truth of the situation).

Anyway, she came by my place and gave them to me, I think she knew I felt bad for misunderstanding the situation but she said it was a birthday present (my birthday being in May) because she never got me one. Well, I went through what she brought and I was pretty suprised, I think it was a good buy.

    Here's a list:

    Indian Head Cents
    1884 (G)
    1885 (G)
    1887 (G)
    1888 (VG)
    1890 (G)
    1891 (VF Full Liberty)
    1892 *Cleaned (F details)
    1893 (G)
    1895 *Cleaned (VG details)
    1908 (F-VF Full Liberty)

    Lincoln Cents
    1911-D (VG)
    1911-S (F)
    1912-D (VG)
    1924-D (F-VF)
    1931-D (VF)

    Buffalo Nickels
    1918 (VG)
    1919 (G)
    1923 (G)
    2 1925 (both G)
    1935 (G)
    1936 (VG)
    7 Unreadable Dates (4 Philadelphia, 2 Denver, 1 SF)

So, for $40 I think she did very well and it was a wonderful gift. Now, her birthday is Wednesday so I got to figure out what to get for her.

Oh, I forgot one as well. To help sweeten the deal the guy threw in an older Mexican coin (about which I know nothing). All I can say is it is about the size of a nickel in diameter and as thick as a dime and its silver.

    Here are a few pics:

Does anyone know what it is and about how old it is (and the approximate value/silver content)?

Definitely sounds like a pretty good deal, you'd better take care of her now.

Isn't that an 8 Reales coin? it sure looks like it, but then again I just started collecting Mexican coins not too long ago.

    Great story.
Thanks for sharing it with us.

Your sister sounds like a wonderful person.
She obviously cares a great deal for you.

Don't know if the coins would have a fair market value of $40, but I'm sure that's beside the point.

I would give all my money and valuables, just to have my beloved sister back with me.

Have to love sisters! Mine works at an ice cream shop and always checks the change for me. She knows the basics like keep all coins before 1964, the Wheaties, and any foreign coinage. I've had quite a few very nice gifts.

Teaching her what to look for in notes now. She has the star note thing down. ;)

Now the question remains: What to buy her?
