I know, I know. It's a G04 1857 quarter. BUT it's the reverse clashed with the reverse of a flying eagle cent! PCGS population is 8 coins. I'm submitting this one next week. I'm sure it's only a $150 coin, but I'm so proud of cherrypicking this piece for $17! Rick Snow looked at it and confirmed it, but he said he only wanted high grade examples.
C-B-D, you seem to really know your stuff. That is the second clashed die that I know of, that you cherrypicked. Good job!
Would you mind taking advantage of this teaching moment, and shed some light for some of us. What is a 'clash die'? And how does this coin relate to the flying eagle cent?
Someone at the mint lined up the reverse of the flying eagle cent die with the reverse of the seated liberty quarter die and smacked/clashed them together with no coin blank in between them. This left a light, mirror-image imprint on the dies. When the mint resumed use of these dies, they punched out coins with that mirror image clash on them.
Take a look here http://indiancent.wikispaces.com/1857+S8 Dies that have been damaged by striking each other without a planchet between them. Typically, this imparts part of the obverse image to the reverse die and vice versa. To the OP - Nice pick up
Here is the flying eagle cent with the seated quarter clash. (I found this one at FUN too... from the same dealer no less!) You can see the eagle's head and wing as a mirror image clash. See it?
okay, looking at your arrows I can see what you aree looking at. But, due to the grade it is tough to see. However, if it is: CONGRATS! Great cherrypick!
