While I'm not sure any will become YN's they sure did have a good time while in the shop. It was a fun experiance for them & myself . I had not had the pleasure of having so many fingers on my cases & questions being thrown at me at what seemed to the same time before . The pack of scouts visited my shop after hours one evening last December. I had an hour or so with them , (& few of their non scout siblings & the parents) & got to go over some of the simple things about the hobby & my profession. Luckly I was prepared & had an outline of what they needed to "know" to earn their loop. The hardest part for me was finding (10) matching SWAG items. Each child got a proof cent, a set of the (4) 2009 Presidential cents,a steel cent , BU 2005 Bison nickel,an Indian head cent & finally they all got to dig through the Buffalo Nickle bin & pick out their own coins. Like I said it was fun & I would do it again for them in a heartbeat ,especially after seeing their faces when they got to dig into the Buff's.
That's fantastic. As a den leader myself, I'm always looking for special opportunities for den activities. Kudos to you for supporting the kids.
Fun for you and for them! I think things like that really get kids going. I gave a kid a morgan dollar (back when they were worth like $10) and have not regretted it a bit. I think it gets them thinking, which could lead them to realize what money really is. That could be a good or bad thing, but the truth will set you free.
My little Cub Scout is working on his "collections" belt loop and pin right now. Of course we're using numismatics for his collection. Hopefully he'll enjoy the hobby as much as I do.
Cub Scouts have a generic "collecting" achievement that can be done in a variety of ways. Boy Scouts has both a coin and a stamp collecting merit badge. My oldest is going to a session this coming weekend where he will complete his coin collecting merit badge.
That is awesome. This remind me of a dealer that treated me well and was the reason I started collecting when I was 10.
I appreciate the comments guys . I would like to do it again sometime ,maybe with an older group to be able to speak a little more advanced, either way would be fun though.
Contact the local Boy Scout Troop and volunteer to be a merit badge councelor, very rewarding experience.
I never got to do such a cool thing in cub scouts.... You never know, you may have helped kick off the next generation of the hobby
