Surprise Filipino Silver!

Discussion in 'US Coins Forum' started by Stripeythecrab, Jan 12, 2013.

  1. A while ago, I sold a majority of my small collection of world coins so I could focus on US issues. They were nothing special, just an accumulation of things I had picked up casually. But before I sold the world coins, I pulled out a few tokens and other things that caught my eye, and among them were two Filipino coins that also said "The United States of America." I set them aside and forgot about them.:rollling:

Now, today I decided to pick them up and take a look in the Red Book, and sure enough, they were in there. And to my delight, one of them was silver!:D This one is a 1945D 20 centavo piece that's 75% silver! It's not much, but it has 0.0965 oz ASW, which is more than a dime. Totally made my night!

Here's a photo. (Sorry for the poor scans...)

And in case you were wondering, the other coin was a 1944S One Centavo - just some copper.

  3. Oh, and I was wondering if anyone else collects US Philippines Issues. I haven't seen to much on here or heard anything about them. It seems to me like a "back of the book" kind of niche (to borrow a stamp collecting term.)

Yeah, I got a few but I don't have any pics except for this one I sold last week. The twenty cent and fifty cent pieces are the ones to keep I mean all are nice but the twenty cent piece is soon gonna be scarce because everyone I know is stashing and keeping them. :thumb:

Not in the '03-'45 time frame most collectors of this series consider 'Philippine' but still a neat piece in my estimation.......:)

I had the privelege of going through someone's 'box of coins' and grabbed this one. I don't believe it is silver or worth anything, but I thought it was a neat coin to add to my collection.
