'99 would be my guess. You can tell because the lower portion of the date curls up into a ball; this was the style for dates in NA in this time.
I see how it could be either, the only reason I'm thinking it might be 1889 is you can see on the '9', the right side of it is flat, but the 3rd number looks a bit like it pinches in towards the middle on the right side, similar to the '8'. The price difference, assuming itd be about a G-4 is $10 for a 1899 or $125 for a 1889. Either way I paid $1.35, so Im not too concerned, after I pick it up I'll take a better picture and post it so we can see what it actually is.
Not much experience in this, but I thought at first it was 1899 then I started second guessing myself and thinking it was possibly an 1898. I was wondering if you laid some tracing paper over it and rubbed it lightly with a pencil and see if you could better idea. I was thinking the light onion skin tracing paper might be thin enough to where it would possibly shed some light on it. I have no idea if this would work, just thinking logically. Good luck. edit : I just zoomed way in then slowly zoomed out and am fairly certain it is an 1889 lmao... The bottom of the third digit had looked like the curl of a 9, but after zooming out the center of that digit looks more like the cross section of an 8 than it does a 9.
My guess is that if you have to ask this question, the answer is irrelevant because it's just a place holder anyway. :hammer:
