I have this 1879 Morgan Dollar that is polished and wondering if I sent it to PCGS's restoration service if they could remove the polish. Would it be worth it and can it be done?
Once a coin has been polished, there is no remedy that can reverse the damage that has been done. Save your money. Chris
I was offered a nice price for my collection from a PCGS authorized dealer. Since most of my dollars polished, would it be worth selling to them and buying PCGS graded ones?
Not sure what a nice price is but problem coins will always be problem coins. It just depends on what you want to own. I would think most would want problem free coins, ever more so for the long term.
"Polish" is another way of saying the luster has been scratched microscopically. No way to repair the luster short of going back in time and striking it again with the same dies.
"Nice" has no meaning when it comes to price. How many silver dollars do you have? What dates/mintmarks? Did he offer you more than melt value? If he did, I have to wonder why he would do that unless there is something he knows that you don't. Chris
If I owned that coin, I would carry it around as a pocket piece for a year or so. It should look much better, if a little less detailed, once it has had a chance to wear off some of the remnants of polishing.
I have around 20 silver dollars, four of them Peace silver dollars. The dealer offered $700 for all them. I thought it sounded like a great price, but now I'm not sure. I will do my best to get a list of what is included. It took him less than ten minutes to make the decision.
Something doesn't smell right. Silver is at $31.08 x 20 = $621.60 x .77344 = $480.77 Ordinarily, a dealer would offer you something less than melt value, say 80-90%. Why would he offer you $700? Chris
Do you think there is something that I am missing in the collection? When I get back home in March, I'll get pictures of everything that I have and make a list. I have some pictures on my computer, but not all of them. That asking price was about 6-7 months ago.
+1 Agree strongly. BTW, OP coins--none are worth slabbing. Two that would not grade, and the Peace Dollar is extremely common. Save your money.
Unless there was a key date mixed in the bunch, I don't know why the dealer would offer you that much. As I recall the highest price point in silver a few months back was about $40. But as far as the photos go, none would be worth grading.
