I often buy coins off of ebay and I like a few of the dealers I use there but they are rather common coins, seldom more than 10 dollars, often 99 cents or maybe even less. It they are buy it now I like that so I can find many coins I like and they combine shipping...otherwise you buy a coin that is worth 50 cents and pay 2 dollars or more. I wish to buy my coins sans shipping or if I buy them I want to buy many coins at once with one shipping charge. I guess my question is: Does anyone have any good online coin shops that have a wide variety of world coins from this century (or all time periods) that I can pick and choose from and not bother with ebay? Or is there a place that tells the coin shops in your city? I have found a few listings for coin shops in Houston and have found a few but they are so far away and I went to one and it was not what the sign said on the outside 'a walk around and browse coin dealer' thus I drove very far for nothing... I have done searches for online coin shops but it never hurts to get some advice...I need to be able to find many different coins I need for my collection in one purchase and one shipping fee or none at all... Or are there other ways to exchange modern coins...lets say I want all the modern coins of greenland...are there monetary exchanges that can just trade in a dollar for a dollars worth of coins from greenland?
That's pretty difficult. Most world coin dealers are somewhat specialized in some areas, hence unable to have all sorts of world coins. What type of world coins are you looking for Drusus?
Not sure of where you live but have you tried to type in on your web finder something like COIN SHOWS and add your state. Around here in Illinois there are so darn many coin shows it is impossible to go to them all. Within about 12 miles from me there is a coin show just about every weekend. One on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of each month. If you go to coin shows even if they don't have what you want many coin dealers will help you find a place or get the coins you are looking for. At a coin show you can see the coins, sell coins, buy coins or just have fun talking to dealers and other collectors. Also, there is usually a pile of documents laying around with adds for other coin shows and/or dealers.
I have done that and I have found several shows here in town that I plan to go to, but like my comics...I like to just go in to a store and shop for what I want and pick from what they have, buy it then and there, no shipping. BTW, there are no specific world coins I collect,I collect them all.
I'm like you. I collec them all. I've bought some things on ebay from coinjunction, honeyisok, and eric0519. Decent transactions. I also like to buy the multi-pound lots. It's fun to look through them and see what I've gotten. EDIT: Oops! I just reread the original post. I misread it the first time. I originally read it as you wanting recs for ebay people.
There is a dealer called willowstudios that is pretty good and often have a rather large selection on E-bay but again, if I dont find quite a few from the selection they happen to have up there then I end up paying well over what the coins are worth.
Well, I took a chance and visited a store (stall) at an antique mall today and found a nice little store that had a large amount of coins one could go through, just what I was looking for, went through a jar of mercury dimes, indian head cents and nickels and a bunch of world coins. got them for cheap, no shipping...so problem solved rather quickly it seems.
You should ask your local dealer if he has a junk box or something in the back room you could search through. My favorite shop has world and us coins by the box full in the back room. They just don't have any space up front for all of them.
