Is there any way for me to tell if a coin was minted in calais ? All I can see are mint marks that are shared with London ?

Medieval coins minted in Calais had the legend "Villa Calisie" or something similar on the reverse of the coin.

Wow ! That was quick !

Thanks though, I want one for my empire collection, as really I guess it was part of the first empire :)

I owned a HVI groat from there but sold it years ago. HVIII was the one who finally lost Calais with all his stupid adventures.

I always understood that Calais was finally "lost" in the reign of Mary Tudor, although probably as a result of her father's antics. She is said to have said "When I die you will find Calais written on my heart" or similar.

Anyway, here is a Henry VI groat from the Calais mint - the words "Villa Calisie" fairly clearly visible in the inner circle on the reverse.
