Need an opinion. I purchased a 2012 Silver Proof set as a gift for my Grandson's 18th Birthday. I got it last night and noticed that the Chaco quarter has a "blemish" on the reverse and that there is also a small scratch on the reverse side of the holder and a longer scratch on the obverse side. Not deep but noticeable The rest of the coins appear flawless. Now, my grandson would never notice the spot on the coin, but I saw it right off. It is just under the C in Culture. The case also has a pinprick scratch in the same area so look below that. There is no question that I can return it for a refund, but forget about an exchange. These sets are already going for $120+ on the bay and I paid $65 for the set. What would you do? Give him the set anyway, or return it? Please forgive the photo. I took it in a hurry this morning in a rush to get to work. I think my camera is going south on me. Same lighting and settings but just couldn't get a cameo effect today. Too big of a hurry.
Well you didn't mention where you purchased it? If the mint I say keep it as your not going to be able to get another one, if a private sale if you can exchange it do so. But for one quarter I'd keep it personally you can always buy that individual quarter separate and replace it with another one that looks better. That's what I would do anyways. You could also buy the silver quarter proof set separate replace that part of the entire set to another one that looks nicer.
Because the Mint has sold out, I would definitely keep it. The scratch may actually be on the holder and not the quarter anyway. Either way, he can always replace the Chaco quarter or the holder quite easily. TC
I bought one on monday and one quarter had a white spot on it Maybe I'm just picky but I want it perfect.
Kinda the way I feel. One quarter with a milk spot. Got the set on the secondary market and now they are sold out which is why I can't exchange it. I might try the idea of buying the Quarters seperatley and replacing it with the set. Give that one to the grandson and keep the others for myself. Hate to give a less than perfect gift. not cool.
Funny I was thinking with my sets that the mint just isn't caring anymore. I'm not returning them or anything in fact it's the set I'm cracking out to make a PDSS set. I have a small tick in the field under the o in Chaco not as bad as yours but there may be a mint issue with some of the dies because the other set is just fine. Also I noticed that the plastic case isn't held together like previous years have been either again it made it easier to open but for someone who wouldn't have opened it up there would be the potential for a lot of air and moisture penetration.
Stinks getting the set like that for sure. However like the others suggest, I'd keep it and see about replacing that one coin. For example I won the Chaco for 6.49 and the Denali for 7.50 graded PCGS PR69 earlier today, so a reasonably priced replacement can be had if you spend the time.
