I also posted this on the coin roll hunters thread. Just a little heads up!! I went to dump about $850.00 worth of change at my CU yesterday. Everything seemed OK but when I got done my total of $739.40 just did not sound right. But I was not sure. I told the girl at the counter that I knew I had $120.00 in Quarters I had counted them and it only rang in $99.75 I weighed my pennies yesterday morn and I had 18.5lb's at 1.5 G's a piece all 83 and above I figured I had close to 40 or 45 in pennies it rang in $29.00. The girl said usually the only time it happens is when the sensors get dirty from real cruddy coins. I got home and found out my halves were off by 88 halves also. I was sick to my stomach. I got a hold of the teller manager in the afternoon that I have known for 25 years and told her, She did not believe me??? I told look I know I am screwed and there is nothing you can do but I wanted to let you know in case it happened to someone else that was not as nice as me. She said give me your # I will call the tech. About a half hour went by she called back and said the tech said it probly did not miss count. I said OK but I know I cant get the money back but yes IT DID MISS COUNT!!! I counted all my halves and Quarters before I cam and the total was wrong. So she said I talked to the manager also and we have pulled and marked all the bags and Monday they get picked up and weighed by the fed and she could tell me by wed if they had a mis count. she said when it happens they get a credit, And if the did she would make sure I was reimbursed.:hail: So guys that dump at those kind of places try and know how much you are dumping and have your receipts photo copied for the coin totals before they take them, They will do it for you and check your totals. And check it !!! JON
Most of the time I come up a dollar or two short, but usually only dump $50 or less. Eight hundred and fifty bucks is a lot to cash out at one time, and I feel your pain.
Exactly, make your dumps smaller. I've seen counters "fatigue out" with large amounts, These are not the same ones Loomis, Brinks, etc. use.
I have always dumped $1000.00 in halves in almost every time I use it. I try to feed slow a hand full at a time, And only every one in a while I get short. If I only dumped $50.00 at a time it would take me days or weeks to get my buy money back. I have to talk with them about supplying me bags? cause I see the fed says if I have a tamper proof bag and mark all the right info including bank and account info they will take them and reimburse me. But they want the exact amount and all coins have to be separated That's not a big deal I usually do. I thought thats how most coin searchers dumped at the small machines at there banks?? Also I did dump a hair faster yesterday than usual Just because I had so many coins and the machine gets used alot by other members. also I remembered around just after Xmas I dumped about 1500 halves and a bunch of pennies and $100.00 in dimes and the belt was real slow the girl said someone had put oily coins in the machine and they had to clean the belt with Joy, I wonder if thats how the sensors got dirty.
Those machines are not reliable even for small amounts. I hand counted 200 halves which is $100. I had 2 coffee cans with 200 halves in each. The first can paid $98.50 and the second $99.00.
I have never been shorted at my CU but I have been credited with a couple dollar coins or halves when all I was dumping was quarters, nickels, and cents Evened it up for what I took out.
My local bank just installed a counter within the last three months. I had used a counter only one other time - and it didn't count correctly. So... I was not very comfortable using them. Well, I have used the one in my bank a half dozen times now, and I believe it has been correct each time. I am surprised it has done so well. I get a full box of coins each time. I try to return exactly a full box. I count and stack in the box so I know the amount. Granted, so far I am returning only one type of coin each time (all nickels or all dimes) therefore I might not be tasking it too much (I don't know how they work on the inside...). I'm very happy with it so far. If it starts messing up, I will stop using it.
The only time I had something like this happen was with something like $900 in dimes at a commercial bank. Knowing this, when I signed up for my CU accounts I put test runs through with all denominations and they have all been correct. Conversely one time I did have halves it showed up $20 more than I knew I had at the bank. But never again at the bank.
I usually wrap all halves and quarters sometimes dimes and nickels also, so I know what I will get at the bank. Normally I only take the pennies in loose to run through the counter because I don't feel like it is worth the trouble to wrap them. Occasionally I will take some wrapped rolls of presidential dollars and halves and quarters to the casino. They always tear them open and run them through the counter. Ironically, the count has always matched exactly and this is the one place where it wouldn't really matter because I am going to lose it all before I leave anyway... Lackluster
My problem here is they will not take wrapped coins unless YOU ARE SPECIAL!!! Other wise they tell you to unwrap and dump in the machine. Does anyone else use the fedsystem? Where you put them in a bag and mark them with all the info and wait for them to count and return the money to your account???
That is the key, you have to MAKE yourself special. I tend to buy off tellers with candy, gift cards etc. Front loading - You'd be amazed how well that works. Banks that don't sell to non-commercial customers or charge for selling rolled coin sell to me with no problems. I can also seemlessly get rid of coin also.
it is funny how it is exactly correct when you buy rolls of coins, but they can get away with giving you less. This happened to me in the past as well, I even counted it all beforehand. My bank also doesn't take rolls.
