This is a coin, that rarely get's discussed. It's kind of the loner in the numismatic forums. In fact, I don't ever remember seeing one on here. Although the gubermint did not make these, I consider them the 1st small cent in the US. If you have any to share, please do!
No small cent type set is complete without one of these in my opinion. Very cool design too... that's one tough eagle. I know I've posed the MS66 example I used to own here before. Owned several other examples over the years too. One of my favorites for sure. :thumb:
Interesting sidelight on the Feuchtwanger 3c coin -- I sold one in Stack's Americana sale of January 2012, and it only graded about fine; the cataloger said it was the lowest grade he had ever seen, and unless it had been carried many years as a pocket-piece, that suggests that they really did circulate as money.
I spent half the day looking for this thing. Here's a well worn example of mine.......... I used to know the attribution of this piece, but lost that information.
Frank Robinson has a great story in "Confessions of a Numismatic Fanatic" about the 3 centers. It starts with him finding a dealer while on vacation, the guy showed him some coins in his bathrobe, but a few months later he got a price list from him. on it was listed a 3 cent coin dated 1857 described as "eagle on rock". Frank thought it may be a Feuchtwanger, so took a gamble and it was. He sold it for like a 2000% profit. Fun book. I recommend it if you can find someone with a copy to loan it to you.
Its a nice looking coin and a good one to own. Though I don't have one, I don't mind getting one in the future. Provided its not too expensive.
Although the MS 65 example from raider was nice, I always have liked coins with a little wear. This one is great!
Green yours is a 5G an R-2 coin. If anyone wants a copy of the article of mine mentioned in the link Green posted above just drop me an email at mschmidt at jayco.net I have the article in either MS Word or PDF formats and it now has images of all six obverses and six of the nine reverses. (The tokens with the B,C and F reverses are R-5, R-8, and R-8 respectively. If anyone knows where I can get images of those three dies I would appreciate it. I wonder if that was the one a member of one of my local clubs bought. He was so thrilled to get it because he had wanted one for many years. That was just about the right time frame and about the right condition level. Unfortunately he died about three months later and I have no idea where the coin is today.
This is a site I believe is run by a member here: http://www.novanumismatics.com/articles/feuchtwangers_composition_cent.php It has the die pair combinations and pics of the B reverse. I've never seen pics of the C or F reverse.
A beautiful old classic design with one of the nicest eagle renditions I've ever seen. I wish we had adopted it for our coinage. Bruce
Conder when i get home I'll take a look at mine. I doubt its the one you need but I see if I can get a picture for you on Friday
