What is the grade and price you'd give these coins? Need the Morgan for my album. Seated dollar front looks worn but back looks really nice? Are they both real?
I'm not an expert at authenticating these. However, if they're real, they both look like pretty harshly cleaned. Both would get a details grade. If they're real.
I'm iffy on both examples. That seated is particularly strange seeing the obverse is obviously good while the reverse is a high XF.
Anyone else have an opinion? same thought I had. Back is really nice front very worn. With the low mintage I became interested in it, but not until I know more about it. Details on a low mintage coin would be ok. Just looking to add something different to my collection. This was the first seated dollar I've seen.
I didn't buy them. They were at an antique shop in town that gets circulated Barbers in every now and again. They said they've been there for 3 weeks. Said 200 on the Morgan and $335 on the Seated. I asked to take pictures, and thought i would get some opinions.
The F grade on the Morgan was good until someone tried to clean it. Then for value, it should drop a minimum of one grade from Fine. A G grade on value at $125, just to fill your album hole. (IMHO) I decline to give you an estimate on the Seated Liberty. I see too many questions about it, which takes it out of my comfort zone.
Both are most likely fakes. Don't even go anywhere near them. I would also bet good money that they are not authentic.
No, that's why I come here. I see coins I don't see very often which makes me want it. Even more so that its a key date. Didn't want another 89CC forum going. This forum is like my wife, but educated on coins
I agree. The Seated looks fake and the Morgan does not look much better. Even if they are genuine they are both harshly cleaned. Antique Shops and flea markets are great places to find fake coins.
To bring this thread back to life, I went back to the Antique shop where they had these. The 1850-O was gone from the display but the Morgan was still there. Walked around the shop a bit to see if anyone else had new coins(many dealers in this building, but two people run the store). In the front register I seen some coins so I asked her to pull them out. I was shocked when I seen this in there for $25! I asked him about it and he said a guy brought them in and it weighs 1gram less than the dollar should weigh. He said it was silver and that's why he was selling it. I'm guessing its counterfeit from what i read here and its not real silver, but I figured I could use it as an example when I'm buying my older coins for my type set. Here it is, all $20 I paid for it.
