Anyone collect the "collectible" 5 OZ ATB "hockey pucks?"

As an experienced big Slver collector, but one who knows little about the America The Beautiful series, I wanted to ask y'alls advice. I have already started to collect the silver proof S mint quarters, but have interest in the 5 oz collector's issue--the low mintage ones that are SP coins. Any advice on mintages, desirability, price range, etc? I have just started to look at them, and they are really beautiful. These would not have to be slabbed (as most know, I tend more towards slab coins), as I like "Minty Fresh" ones in original packaging just as well. Comments and advice welcome.

I think they are very nice looking, but there is something about them I do not like.

An american silver eagle has a denomination of 1 dollar. It's one troy ounce.

So the mint makes a 5 oz coin. One would think a 5 oz coin would carry a denomination of 5 dollars. But this hockey puck only has a denomination of..... 25 cents.

    1 oz coin, denomination 1 dollar, 5 ounce coin, denomination 25 cents.

Take the design of the seated liberty. It was used on half dimes, dimes, quarters, half dollars, and dollars.

Now if the mint makes ATB quarters, why couldn't they of just made the ATB hockey pucks 5 dollar coins?

It would have required special legislation to change the denomination I think ... so basically it's just a jumbo quarter made of 5 oz of silver instead of .2 oz of NiCupro

At these mintages, if they ever catch on, they're going to the moon. Aside from investment potential, they're the best way to appreciate the beautiful ATB designs.

I just ordered this baby from the mint--the 5 oz "Arcadia" P mint collectible. Max mintage of 25,000 and I LOVE the design:

I dig them and have a couple. Trying to put a full set (in OGP) together but since I didn't get started right when the program began its pricy to play catchup since each year is basically 25 oz of premium priced silver. Maybe one day.

  9. I have a few of them and also like big silver. I will just get the ones I like as storage will become an issue to collect the entire run. I do not care that they have a 25 cent face value, as they would not fit in any soda machine anyway. :goofer: I also life the silver ATB quarters (regular size) as well. ;) TC

The train left the station on these back in 2010 but I really, really liked the pieces I had purchased.

I didn't like them enough to hang onto them though since the prices were just out of line with where silver ended up.

On the other hand, I see nothing wrong with folks wanting a collection of these. Having a face value of 25 cents seems, well, a little silly though.

I agree with you--they have taken off price wise on the secondary market. The other issue, as another poster put it is storage space for these to have a full collection. My take is to buy a few of them every now and then, and get the newer ones, as they will most likely appreciate due to the maximum mintage of 25,000 now imposed, and the very attractive design. It is a lot easier to collect the regular silver proof S mint quarters, and that I shall do, with a few of these added for icing on the cake.

I haven't gotten any of the "collector" versions but did grab a bullion version of the El Yunque for $170. I ended up liking it a bit more than I thought I would, thus I plan on getting some more later this year. I doubt I'll ever amass a full collection, but do want to get ones of the designs I like. I would love to get the collector versions, but the premiums are too high IMO.

I would like them more if they had a different obverse. The washington quarter obverse just seems weird to me on these coins.

They could have tried to make it more economical for collectors and simply put two ATB designs per coin. That would have been cool. Mix and match them, so there are different combinations possible per coin. Maybe the Grand Canyon/Yosemite is a common combination, but the Grand Canyon/Yellowstone is a rare combination.

I know, maybe its a weird idea. I am full of them some days.

Plus with the price of soda in those machines these days you would need at least 4 of them to get a drink. ;)

    Wiki says:
"Quarters will be issued depicting designs of national parks and sites in the order of which that park or site was deemed a national site."

Tried to find something on the Mint site. It's probably there somewhere...

    edit:
which makes El Yunque in Puerto Rico old!(?)

I love them and wish I could afford all, as it is I get the designs I love, so about a third of them. Wild a crazy stuff going on with pricing and lowering mintages, you should get at least one right away and see how you like it. I do think it's better to focus on collector versions, but getting some bullion is neat, also, now that the mintages are 20k max...maybe less next year? hard to imagine the mint continuing both versions to the end.

I bought a Vicksburg at the beginning of last year, received it within a few days, I was very happy with the coin. Designs look great overall. The only "problem" if that's what you can call it is that the obverse of Washington's head looks kind of odd at such large dimensions. I got used to it and am very pleased with the purchase. I haven't bought any ATB's since but plan on buying one soon as I've heard they've scaled back the mintage and am hoping they will pay off someday.
