I haven't been able to stump y'all yet, and I'm sure this one won't be a huge challenge either. I just can't find it. It's an oriental coin but with an English year of 1986, so at least I know I haven't reversed the coin this time... It's the last coin in a bucket of random stuff from my family's travels that my son and I are trying to identify. After this, it's back to US coins for a while. Thanks for the help.
China, one fen, 1986. These are now long out of circulation as they lost value due to inflation. When I was there a few years ago even the 5 fen coins were getting scarce.
That completes our bucket! We had coins from over 20 different countries, and the last few were all solved by the fine folks of this board. Thanks.
The only time I saw those really low value 1 and 2 fen coins were in donation kettles etc. In some places like Guangzhou paper money was used for 1, 2, and 5 Jiao the equivalent of 10, 20 and 50 Fen, but in Beijing the coins seemed to be more popular. I still have a small wad of really low denomination paper money from my travels there, the money was really interesting.
It's very light, I assume it's made of aluminum. I have a bunch of old Italian coins that are also aluminum. I don't like 'em. I like to feel the weight of a coin in my hand, makes it feel like it's actually worth something.
