what do you think I just starting to learn about these. http://cgi.ebay.com/1873-CC-SILVER-...2QQihZ010QQcategoryZ11978QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Looks counterfit to me--- Rim is not correct, color off. ect Please let me know what to look for. It seems the scamed are trying to get there money back
It is a fake. With out a doubt. Notice on the obverse, the closeup of the laurel leaves, because they are not all connected, this indicates to me that it is a common counterfiet.
Almost every trade dollar on ebay is a fake unless its slabbed by a respected grading company. They made about a million of these in China!
I think it is a fake although it is a better one than most of them I see. I don't like the denticals, and I definitely don't like the olive branch. I don't think the got the shape of the seven quite right either. I will give them credit, it isn't the usual fake CC reverse die that you see on so many of them, and they did get the obverse and reverse types right. Although I am normally a anti slab person, when it comes to trade dollars and ebay, slabbed coins are almost a must. The number of raw counterfeit trade dollars at shows where you can examine the coins in person is higher than for probably any other series, but on ebay the fakes outnumber the real coins probably by more than a 20 to 1 ratio. And that is if you exclude the sellers from China. If you include them it is probably closer to 50 to 1. In other words, if there are 500 raw trade dollars listed on eBay, 10 of them will be real. It just isn't worth the trouble to buy them raw. Don't buy them from the fly-by-night grading services either. They may not have the experience to spot the fakes, or even worse there have been a few fly-by-night services formed specifically to SELL fake coins, and I would expect to see more in the future.
If you are going to take on the huge task of completing a ray trae dollar set I would recommend purchasing at least one certified trade dollar, for comparison reasons.
