So I asked for a Dansco half dollar Commerative album but they were sold out. They ended up getting me the 1891-1921 Morgan dollar book. I checked the RedBook and Holy Honking Key Dates! I'm going to try and put together an unc+(minus keys of course) where would you start? I have 3 albums going right now so I might add 1 coin every month or two. Thanks everyone!
In my case it's one of two things. 1) Whats at the local coin store I go to, within my budget and also one that I need. I fill up the holes in my albums first. There are a bunch of Morgan's that are within my budget and there are also some of which will never see my Intercept album too. 2) On line, kind of same parameters as #1 above. I have a few coin web sites that I trust. In case of Morgan's since they tend to be pricier, I like to have the ability to hold them/inspect them first before buying. That's just me. Also coin shows are great as well.
i only have 2 shops in town that sell Morgans. The one is a gold/silver shop, the other is a 3x4 showcase in an antique shop and he's never there to haggle on price. I mostly use eBay to buy my coins but sometimes the pictures are taken in the sellers advantage.
1) I'd start with the easier dates. and 2) NO, not a proof. Proof-like. San Francisco did not strike proofs. [yeah, I know, there are exceptions to everything, like the 1894 S Barber Dime. But, no proofs as a rule.]
Definitely not a proof, proof like examples are very common for that date. Once you're familiar with Morgans and have seen a few PL and proof coins it'll be easy to tell the difference. This is a proof: http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1169&lotIdNo=1655
