Seller Alternatives to eBay

    Hi folks,

I list a fair number of coins on eBay, and have lately decided to look into alternative platforms because I dislike listing fees and they only give me 50 free ones a month. It's only January 6th, and I've already used up more than half of those.

I liked what I saw at eBid.net, but noticed that although they had nearly 41,000 listings for U.S. coins, they had over 918,000 listings for comics, magazines, and books. So it seems their emphasis is elsewhere. By the way, eBay had over 505,000 listings for U.S. coins. I do like the fact they never have a listing fee and for $50, no final value fees for life.

Next up was webstore.com. They had only 19,000 listings for U.S. coins, but boasted no listing or selling fees.

I also looked at coinshop.com (4,159 listings), but was unimpressed.

Looking at it from a buyer's standpoint, I want choice, choice, choice! Whether it be price, shipping, or condition. The only site I see, at this point, that offers this is eBay. Ugh!

eBay sellers: is there an alternative site to eBay that I haven't mentioned where there are a great number of listings in conjunction with low (or no) fees where you list? If so, where and what do you like/dislike about it?

Thank you very much for your input!

Sometimes I buy coins on wensy.com. They don't have fees at all. The problem as a seller is that you will rarely sell anything, and if you do will most likely just get one bid. So if you list there, list it at the price you want it to sell for, because a bidding war is unlikely. I've tried Webstore too, which you mentioned. I sold about 5-6 coins on there and I buy some too. It's similar to wensy as far as traffic goes.

My hobby is 4-wheeling and I sell 4x4 parts also. I sell most of them on forums and make decent money at it. I have been buying complete collections locally I need to sell many of the once I don't want. Maybe selling on some of the bigger forums? Which ones have the best classifieds?

I've never sold but have been pondering selling a coin or two. Does everyone get the 50 free ones a month, or do you have to be a premiere member or something like that?

One problem with all of the alternatives listed above, as a buyer I have never even heard of any of them. It does not matter how many listings they have or how high their fees are, but what matters most is how many buyers are on the site.

I believe everyone gets 50 free "listing fees" per month, but the majority of cost is the selling fee.

I agree with you there. If there is no traffic, there is no competitive bidding and no sales. Thanks for the input!

Why not post on here? I'd buy from a fellow Texan.

If you don't necessarily need an auction environment you could try blujay. It's a free listing marketplace and as of right now has ~6500 coin listings and ~3200 of those are US coinage. For full disclosure, I have never used the site, but have heard numerous times that it is a nice alternative to the 800lb gorilla that is ebay. I hope this helps!

A lot of European sellers use Delcampe.net - I tried for a while but the focus does seem to be on French speaking countries. There have been some bargains...

That's face it... there are plenty of alternatives, but there are no equal alternatives. The only success I ever had was with Amazon auctions about 12 or 13 years ago, and they're no longer around. As stated above, these sites have plenty of sellers, but few buyers.

  15. I know a few people who have had some luck selling on Craigslist although there is probably greater risk than reward there. It seems that eBay does not have any good competition. Maybe you can set up a table at a local coin show? TC

I used Wensy, as well. I found it very frustrating. Sold a Palestine piece (my 1st offering) bought by the owner. I then went months w/nada.
The sraw was when I offered war nics @ face, without a bite. Very odd.

Yes craigslist seems to work and I am looking into a table. Its $65 and requires an all day commitment.

My local shows are over 300 so consider 65 a screaming deal.

Ebay is the biggest marketplace, the other you mention are way down the list. I would give greatcolelctions a shot, I like using them. I do all my stuff at .99 cents to start no reserve no matter where it goes.

Why is it that people expect things to be free or inexpensive ? Ever hear - you get what you pay for ? Ebay is a business, they are in business to make money, they are not in business so you can make money. They don't care if you make money or not. And neither does any other business.

Ebay started out with very low fees in 1998 to attract users to their site. But they have steadily raised their fees because that was their business model. Go cheap at first to attract people and put competitors out of business. Once they got the people raise the fees steadily so they could make more money. The model worked like a charm. They are now the big dog, the only big dog. So if you want to use them - you pay. Just that simple. And what they had planned all along.

My local coin store lists on ebid. I work so hard on ebay that I dont have the patience for any other site.
Not everybody gets 50 free listings a month on ebay. If you pay for an ebay store, they wont give you the free listings.
You can cancel your store at the end of every month, list your 50 free on the 1st, and reopen your store on the 2nd.
